Hatred of One, Hatred of All: The Undeniable Link Between Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia

Hatred of One, Hatred of All: The Undeniable Link Between Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia

Juan Cole

One person is dead and other victims are wounded after a shooting at a synagogue in San Diego on Saturday, which the mayor has branded a “hate crime.”

The attack came a day after an Iraq War veteran was arraigned in Sunnyvale, Ca. in the north of the state for running over 8 persons, some of whom he incorrectly believed to be Muslims.

Semite is a racial category. Even ‘being Jewish’ does not necessarily mean a religious believer, since many, many ‘Jews’ are non-practitioners. Islam, on the other hand, is a religion pure and simple, the free choice of believers. The former cannot help being who they are; the latter chooses to be who they are. It is hardly helpful for the author to confuse the two for his readers, on such a sensitive subject.

Our Constitution prohibits any official policy to favor a religion over any other. But it does not mean that we must honor, revere or even think well of any religion. Religions are by definition faith based, not rationality based. A nation of ever larger numbers of irrational people is just the wrong path to take.

The important thing to remember - religion is faith based, not rationality based. All religions.
