Homily for the Slain

Homily for the Slain

Camillo Mac Bica

I believe this should be the last year we “celebrate” Memorial Day. Perhaps this may seem callous or uncaring especially coming from a veteran who served in war and suffered the deaths of friends and comrades, but it is exactly because of my service and my respect for the slain, and the living, that I make this request.

Instead, I will spend this weekend remembering what I and so many veterans, living and dead, have suffered and the suffering we have caused others.

Well put and so true.

How very true! Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day have all become, essentially, occasions for glorification of militarism and war (and disgusting commercial hype).

Thank you for the article and you bravery to to stand up and challenge all the hypocrisy and propaganda that serves only those in power who wish to keep fighting wars. Well said.

If only we learned from the mistakes of war.

“The finest Memorial to our fallen warriors
would be to end the wars,
and create no more of them."

Memories of wars long done,
Evoked each year by martial displays.
Mothers with a Gold Star instead of a son
Once felt pride at the return of peaceful days.
Regrettably, the peace did not last.
Individuals again were required to die,
As nations and rulers tried to hold fast
Lands where dreams of freedom lie.

Dutifully the cemeteries again are filled,
As the wealthy and powerful make sure the world is billed,
Yes, once more, for this, youth must kill and be killed.

And still it goes on!
Will we ever learn?
