Hostile State-Level "Crusade" Against Women's Health Continued in 2015

Deirdre Fulton, staff writer

"Extreme hostility" toward women's healthcare and abortion access continued in 2015 and went far beyond attempts to defund Planned Parenthod, with state legislatures introducing nearly 400 bills and enacting 47 new laws restricting reproductive rights, according to a new report from the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR).

A powerful Feminist I met 25 years ago said that she was tired (then) of getting back in the trenches to fight battles already won.

The Right Wing Christians are well-organized because when people want to follow strict rules, it's easy for them to line up in a singular formation. And authoritarian beliefs induce that sort of conformity and obedience; yet it's noxious to a thriving Democracy built upon rich diversities.

Environmentalists are the kings of "winning a few and losing a few." And while the EPA had teeth for a time and actually did the work of enforcement acting as a bulwark against industrial polluters of the worst order, the era of pro-corporate deference (along with all sorts of deregulation practices) is still underway. And it's weakened the EPA.

Not only that, while it would seem that certain battles against deep sea oil drilling, the Canadian tar sands pipeline, and NY fracking operations have been won... the Energy Cartels know that TPP and TIPP will render any protections to persons and ecosystems null and void.

Same thing with Civil Rights. While it's true that some Black individuals have attained leadership roles, and that Blacks have a major influence upon the music industry and sports; life for the average Black person is far worse than it was since probably the l950s.

Plenty of states are finding ways to limit Black voters' right to vote, their access to voting places, or otherwise utilizing gerrymandering to render their votes less consequential.

My point is that the old calcified interests that want to rule society like pharaoh-tyrant-corporate-kings have managed to rollback women's rights, Black civil liberties, Hispanic rights, and Environmental provisions and protections.

It is EXHAUSTING to fight these battles over and over again.

The most damning thing is that those telling others how they must live--as they impose their strident rules--wax lyrical about words like freedom and Democracy. They are clueless. They think if everyone acted, thought, and looked alike the world would be "free."

Why are our dollars going to the benefit of these institutions?

Even in Ireland , long a bastion of the Catholic Church and it's policies , the people and the State move slowly towards ensuring women have control over their own bodies.

Here in Canada we just rid ourselves of Stephen Harper , who in private was against abortions (along with a number of those in his party) but who instructed his party not to raise the issue and did all he could to stay out of that debate. He knew full well trying to push that agenda would cost his party votes.

The USA is a different matter entirely. That ever growing front and central Militarism and the embrace of the "war on everything" meme that a reflection of that same militarism is at the core of this regression.
