How You Do It

Just weeks after one mass shooting, New Zealand lawmakers have voted 119-1 to ban most military style assault rifles and semiautomatic weapons after an expedited debate that swooped right past any thoughts and prayers crap. PM Jacinda Ardern dismissed the one no voter who questioned that speed with fierce acuity: "You either believe that in New Zealand these weapons have a place or you do not. My view is an argument about process is an argument to do nothing.”

If one goes to these right wing pro-gun websites you will notice a number of stories that try and spin the prevalence of guns in the USA into a good thing.

As example you will find a number of stories on knife attacks increasing in the United Kingdom. They will jump on any such incident and post statistics that show the number of knife attacks dwarfs those in the USA and it all because Citizens in the UK are “not allowed to defend themselves”. In making such a case they fail to recognize that the Homicide rate in the United Kingdom , even with all those “madmen running around wielding knives against who no-one has any way to defend themself” is about 4 TIMES less per Capita.

Other stories will be carried where they show how a homeowner or woman or father or mother used their guns to shoot people that had broke into their homes, or attempted a rape or kidnapping of a child. They will claim the incidents of this happening in the USA are far greater then reported and were people not armed the crime rates for such incidents would skyrocket. This of course begs the question. How is it those Countries with gun control laws able to have lower rates of crime in these areas then the US of A?

Is it “American exceptionalism” that persons living in the USA are so willing and eager to kill one another and rob one another that all that can keep them from acting on those impulses is a gun? If so than there something seriously wrong which all of the guns in the world can not put right.

I feel like I just woke-up from a dream. This can’t be real. Yes, it is and it re-emphasizes the political insanity that is holding back like-action in the US. When a person comes to your country with a white power manifesto, buys the weapons in your country, uses them to kill 50 and injure more innocent people in a hate-filled attack that shatters the belief that your society is safe, this is what a sane national leader and legislators ought to do. They did and the US Congress can look upon it in shame as they allow mass-shootings by assault rifle-carrying crazies to continue because of their inaction.

Legislating in New Zealand is facilitated in comparison to the U.S. by it being a unitary state (with a unicameral parliament as well) and no executive with the power of veto over legislation.

The U.S. was colonized, founded and ‘preserved’ by killing people. Once established culture has a very strong tendency to persist.

So true. We have a Senate, which gives a disproportionate amount of power to rural states, which are the strongholds for Second Amendment fanatics.

Machine gun bacon? Oh --wrap bacon around the rifle barrel, and put tin foil over it, and then shoot the gun a lot at your target. The gun barrel gets hot, the bacon gets crispy…so how many bullets are used per piece of bacon? That seems insane, wasteful, and probably not very healthy to eat.
On the other hand America can’t do this because all politicians depend on money to get elected----and groups like the NRA have so much money to spread around that the sane people can’t compete. New Zealand is full of many more sane people for such a small population-------compared to America.
