'Huge Victory for Our Oceans': Judge Blocks Trump Effort to Open Arctic to Oil and Gas Drilling

Jake Johnson, staff writer

Preserving over 120 million acres of federal waters from exploitation by fossil fuel giants, a federal judge ruled late Friday that President Donald Trump's effort to open the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean to oil and gas drilling is illegal.

Another judge who will be added to Trump’s and the GOP’s hit list.

At least there are a few judges that ‘get it’. They get how fossil fuel extraction and use threatens our very existence. Then to destroy some of the little pristine environments left in world in order to make profit without any regard to the permanent damage they cause has to be halted in any way possible, this time by the courts. Let’s hope they continue to serve life(and people) instead of profit. Lately there have been many ultraconservative judges appointed and conformed by Congress. These are from a list of ‘business friendly’ judges that will side with the corps and continue with massive exploitation of Earth’s resources. This is the real damage done by the Trump admin; something rarely mentioned in the corporate(MSM) press.

Most of these federal judges are lifetime appointments, thank goodness.(In these cases anyway.)

And when they simply ignore the judge’s ruling, as they did with the immigrant child abduction centers, what then?

Good news!

We don’t need Trumps’ approval. The Oil and Gas Drillers have been doing just fine all by themselves, and will find a way around this ruling. They buy their Air & Water Rights by paying off the power people in Governments and Drill Away, leaving us to clean up their mess as there are always leaks. Then transport Tankers come into play with drunken Captains at the helm. We know the rest…

The environment is God.

Although the author deems this a “huge victory”, it actually does almost nothing in terms of staving off the mass extinction of most of the species now inhabiting earth, an extinction well under way and which, a thousand such court rulings notwithstanding, will take mass mobilization of world economies and political systems to even begin to address. Such a mobilization is highly unlikely. Start grieving the death of everything you know. Fighting for small victories is human nature and commendable. Seeing the big picture, free of denial, is unfortunately, rare.

Like AOC eluded to, we will have to jump on this. No incrementalism. Massive changes that will disrupt a number of things. Are we smart enough to know that it is our destiny that will enable us to endure the hardship of change?

This monumental task is similar in intensity as would be the exposing of aliens on earth. Our religions would quake.

When the history books are written about the illegal actions taken by this administration, there will be nothing but illegal actions.

Man, in his folly (women are left off the hook when citing our destructive species), thinks that technology will solve all our problems, even going so far as to say we need to spend millions more tax dollars on our quest to populate Mars. He relies on religion to obviate his responsibility to take care of his own home, beautiful bountiful earth, now rendered fragile and heading to oblivion because of the greed of this stupid ape. Yes, I’m one of them, but at least I work as much as I can for change.

Exactly. It might be deemed illegal. Who’s going to stop them? Greenpeace?

Or history books methinks.

Incredible. Here’s another one:

Sea Shepard- they are more confrontational than Greenpeace.

If you take heart medicine do you wait until you are out of medicine before reordering? Of course not, that would be irresponsible. Should we wait until the ocean is lapping our feet, or we are sweltering in our homes before we do something about climate change? Of course not, that would be irresponsible.
Which lends us to the question of how much, or how little oil and minerals we should be extracting. As they say, a little planning can go a long way.

Putting things in context isn’t always easy. In this case I decided to google Dylan’s “You got to serve somebody.”
Reading the lyrics is like embarking on critical think. No specific rant.

Apparently, you know nothing of the science of climate change and you’ll deny it to your grave. Read what you want to read, but you might think about turning off Fox News. You think man can solve all his problems? Yes he can if the anti-science people and powerful idiots like the president step out of the way. And why would people spout facts just to “scare folks”? What’s in it for them? Science is not “fake news”. Go back to your right-wing blogs. You’re making a fool of yourself here.
