Humanity Washed Ashore

Robert C. Koehler

Who are all these people?

Here’s another global problem — this flow of refugees — that national governments are apparently incapable of dealing with in a long-term, cooperative, globally responsible way. As with climate change, as with war and disarmament, they retreat into insularity in the face of such matters and become protective of their short-term, individual “interests,” which mostly concern the bureaucratic sacredness of their borders and an obsessive distinction between us and them.

"Humanity washes ashore, but does anything change? There’s only one way for real change to happen: The value of human life must supersede citizenship."

To which I'll add that the quality of human life must supersede the quantity of human life if things are to improve.

We cannot address the problem of the refugees of imperialist interventions and neo-liberal economic policies over there without addressing it at home. Refugees from ruinous policies, destroyed economies and violence in Syria and North Africa cannot be honestly put in a separate category than those coming from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala or Mexico. The embedded corporat press wants to call some "refugees" and others "illegal aliens" when the reality is that all of them are refugees. Our country isn't in a position to criticize any other on mistreatment of refugees. Migration is not a crime -- it is a result of crime.

I'm really glad that the author recalled the history of us interventionist policies in central and south america during the reagun years. This isn't a new phenomena but rather a symptom of the problems caused by the same interventionists who still think seeking regime change will solve the problems.... Only, the problems have been manufactured all this time by the interventionists, whether its to source cheaper bananas or oil. It never really was about drugs or terrorism. The drugs and terrorism has been nothing more than smoke and mirrors to get the us population on board to support their hidden imperialist agendas. Well, not-so-well hidden imperialist agendas. The inteventionists haven't been that smart but then bullies never have been noted for their inteligence.

A good linked article on how the West want to exploit this tragedy.

"Warmongers in government and the media are perversely but predictably trying to conscript Aylan’s corpse into their march to escalation. They are contending that Aylan died because the West has not intervened against Syria’s dictator Bashar al-Assad, and that it must do so now to spare other children the same fate."

"that national governments are apparently incapable of dealing with in a long-term, cooperative, globally responsible way. "

Correction:

"that conservatives are incapable of dealing with in a long-term, cooperative, globally responsible way".
