Hyping the Iranian ‘Threat’

Hyping the Iranian ‘Threat’

Paul Pillar

The idea of Iran as a regional marauder that is gobbling up other countries in the Middle East and against which pressure must therefore be unrelenting has become one of the favorite themes of those determined to kill the nuclear agreement with Tehran. As an argument for rejecting the nuclear deal, this approach has always suffered from major factual and logical flaws.

There are two main reasons Iran is demonized by the US government and Israel, and “being a regional threat” is not one of them.

  1. They support Hezbollah and the Palestinian cause in general, unlike the quisling tyrants in Arab countries “friendly” to the US.

  2. The US has never forgiven them for throwing out the bloodthirsty Shah.

None of this, you will notice, has anything to do with nuclear weapons. Nor does it constitute being a “regional troublemaker.” Indeed if the latter were a criterion honestly utilized for the region, we all know who the no. 1 culprit would be, and in that case there would be real concern for nukes in the hands of psychopaths.

This “peaceful” intent is in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran:

the army of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps… will be responsible… for fulfilling
the ideological mission of jihad in God’s way; that is, extending the sovereignty of God’s law throughout the world

Are you paid to propagate lies, or do you do it just for fun?

Google the Constitution for yourself before you claim I’m lying–this is simply a quote from the preamble of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran…
