'If These Miners Were Bankers, Congress Would Have Bailed Them Out Already,' Says Sanders as Bankrupt Murray Coal Threatens Pensions
It saddens me that all these years, these miners have been duped into voting repuglican.
Sanders is being smart by offering compensation and services to displaced fossil fuel workers.
I hope the message gets through.
Sorry, miners, but you got what you voted for. Couldn’t see it coming? That’s all on you.
That’s a pretty heavy promise to offer Bernie. It didn’t work so well for Bill Clinton and NAFTA.
Amen. I’ve been saying for years now that the time has come for dumb people to pay the price for their poor electoral choices.
The problem is that they are not just killing themselves anymore. They are taking the rest of us with them.
It takes me back to an old axiom that I think is very telling now. We have never been lead by out best and brightest. We have always been led by our most ruthless, our most aggressive, and of course, our most wealthy.
Sadly, for me as well, I expect many of the miners to continue believing the propaganda that has hurt them, is hurting them, and will continue to hurt them. So is the weight and influence of the corporate-owned media.
The few remaining union mines in all of the Appalachians are the Murray mines that they bought from Consol Energy (formerly Consolidation Coal) in N. WV and E. Ohio. Bob Murray hates unions and has no doubt been planning this “bankruptcy” - a tried and true union busting tactic - for a long time.
Another privatized utility going bankrupt, stealing all the funds, and trying to deprive workers their benefits for healthcare and retirement. Neoliberalism at it’s worse.
Bernie fights for workers rights - all of them, men and women, even if they have been seduced and lied-to into believing the present-day RepubliCon Conservative (as well as DINO Dems) lies and deceit that uses or ignores their lives. Bernie is right-on that if they were bankers, these workers would already have been “bailed-out”, and that is the kind of corruption power politics we must smash and defeat!
Miners and others from that rural area of America most often had no where else to go to provide for their lives and families, and that financial/economic captivity was taken advantage of.by the company bosses, even up to death by Black Lung and deadly working conditions.
Bernie is reaching-out to miners and other workers thru-out America to help them remember their history and believe in a different future - Bernie does this not because of a momentary political strategy or ploy, but he believes in the justice of the thing to his bones!
Maybe the miners and the others will also remember their radical heritage of resistance to the bosses, company goons, and police killers - a proud socialist heritage that needs new life and breath.
Not “all these years” Only in 2016 for most of them - especially the UMWA miners. Except for the non-coal, farming and logging eastern panhandle, West Virginia was die-hard Democrat until the 2000 election.
Unfortunately the Coal Miners believed in the Snake Oil Salesman that promised increased production in the “Clean Coal” Industry, when any child knows that Coal is the Horse & Buggy business of the 21st Century, extinct, too costly, dangerous to our Health, and no longer required or desired.
BERNIE SANDERS - 2020
Now this kind of language which has been missing form the Dems for years. And why? Because they are all in the pocket of the banksters.
Keep this up Bernie and you just might get yourself elected (If the media will cover your message…a big “If”)
Coal miners are tough people, other than the ones who have black lung disease.
I urge them to find the owners and managers of Murray Coal, and get their compensation direct from the capitalist greedheads who are responsible for the losses.
Only when the wealthy elites pay a personal price for their vulture capitalism will they start to fear the peasants and change for the better.
The following excerpts express the democratic socialist view:
‘We should be fighting on the terrain of democracy by arguing that we can make our economy more productive, more just, and more sustainable by extending and deepening democracy. The reality is that the Right’s successes in limiting democracy by empowering big money in campaigns, gerrymandering, restricting voting rights, and undermining unions have the consequence of making our economy less productive. When democracy is restricted, business opts for predation rather than efficiency since it is always easier to rip people off than to build a better mousetrap.’
Thank you Emphyrio, It is easy for us to blame the poor and working class. But we must try to understand how they are used by the dark corporate and political forces in the US. These people are mostly desperate. They have little education, the churches collude with the politicians to invent identity politics issues such as abortion and climate change myths. The political system along with Falwell, Ralph Reed and racist groups feed them lies. Every high school has an active ROTC recruiter. They are also brainwashed in classes run by military recruiters. Where they are filled with stories of military glory. They are told by politicians that migrants are stealing their jobs. There are no newspapers in most of the towns and FOX is where they get their information. BIg Pharma has pumped billions of pills into these communities. Devastating them even more. There are no jobs because of NAFTA I have family in these towns in the south. Much of what has devastated their communities is not of their doing.
Bernie is right to reach out to these people. They voted for trump because they believed him. We voted for Obama because we believed him. Desperate people will do anything to try to save their families.
Let’s cut them some slack. Bernie won West Virginia. The DNC cheated him. Trump lied to them. Hillary offered them nothing. They voted for Trump.
These people have no money and no power. Murray coal will blow them off like coal dust. Please stop blaming poor working class people. Blame the lying bastards in Washington and the Corp clintonite dems for dumping them. Blaming poor people with no money or power won’t help anyone.
My comment doesn’t blame them, although it’s true that they freely chose to work for the earth-killing coal industry, and many of them vote for conservative politicians owned by the coal industry. They have power, as long as they have a body and a will. My suggestion further empowers them. They should hunt down the rich people who gamed them, and get their compensation direct.
Kind of like a tamer version of this hilarious, revolutionary movie:
ALL CEO’s and Sr Management of greedy parasitic corporations need to learn to fear the peasants Fear is one of the few things that gets through to them and the quickest way to equalilty
I didn’t see it as blaming the Poor - at all.
I hear they’re great, with FAVA beans and a nice Chianti
