If Western Civilization's So Superior, How Did It Produce Steve King?

A few salient points on the well-deserved uproar greeting Steve King's "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies" line, the latest from a sordid, witless white supremacist who for years has used his office to spout insults about the brown people in "his" country. On history: We are all someone else's baby. On context: This is today's GOP. To the media: His comments aren't "viewed as racist" by some - they're racist. To Iowans: Time to deport some white men.

..."deport some white men" is an outstanding idea! Problem is, who would take them?

It is unreal that he keeps getting elected. So many scared, angry, bigoted voters concentrated in his western Iowa district.

Conservative lawmakers such as King are forgiven their racism, bigotry, and xenophobia if they make news stories for their efforts, and raise money for the Republican Party.

Having grown up in that district, I recall a number of conservative Congressmen, but King is in a class by himself. The district is also home of Iowa Governor and Senator, the late Harold Hughes, and Congressmen Berkley Bedell (D) and Fred Grandy (R).

Western civilization is superior not because it produced Steve King, but because it’s produced, for instance, a progressive community and Common Dreams news outlet amid one of the world’s most reliable and comfortable standards of material life. It is the birthplace of the concept of human rights now recognized worldwide. None of this is to say Westerners haven’t done ugly things to match whatever good we claim authorship of; the West is not immune to human greed. Nor does superiority today imply superiority forever; other civilizations have performed better than ours in the past and may do so again. But the cynical self-hatred which has become fashionable in liberal circles is not warranted, nor does it really constitute the critical self-analysis a healthy civilization should undertake.

"I'd like to see an America that's just so homogenous that we look a lot the same."

Well then Mr. King one sure way to that goal would be to follow the advice of the fictional Bullworth: "We all just need to keep fucking until we're all just one color."

What is the point of your comment? Nobody here is engaging in cynical self-hatred. They are engaging in denunciations of a profoundly racist equation of "civilization" with white people. Of course, not only is it racist, but living in a place with nothing but white people - especially the profoundly uneducated and ignorant people who seem to be typical of USAn white people, would be so boring and sensory-depriving I'd probably commit suicide.

Also, recall what Samuel Huntington (who was hardly a "liberal") wrote:

"The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion (to which few members of other civilizations were converted) but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do."

I noticed you an another of the large number of commenters who just joined us - obviously as part of some kind of organized trolling effort. Which Republican congressman do you work for? Or are you a white House staffer, or on one of those Cabinet Dept. "beachhead teams"?

Here is a radical idea. Deport all black people to Europe and all white people to Africa. Complete environment switch. Do not allow any migration. Wait 200 years. Observe the results. We will be back where we started, except this time Europe will be the shit hole and Africa the industrialized continent.
