I'm Dying From ALS and Here's My Message: No More Half Measures. Only Medicare for All

Ady Barkan

Note: Ahead of a Tuesday hearing in the U.S. House Committee on Rules regarding Rep. Pramila Jayapal's bill to establish a single-payer Medicare for All health care system in the United States, dying healthcare activist Ady Barkan released the following prepared remarks. Owing to the advanced progression of his ALS, Barkan will deliver this testimony using a computer system that tracks his eye movements and subsequently converts text into speech.

The best congress money can buy hears only corporations and is deaf to constituents.

I tried to post a crying emoticon but it apparently didn’t work. [crying emoticon] that will have to do. :frowning:

I watched some of the hearing and got some of his testimony, it was very powerful. I can attest that gofundme is no healthcare system. Yes, I have Medicare but make $14.00 a month too much in Social Security for Medicaid. It is the co-pays and deductibles. If I got the surgeries I need I would have to file for bankruptcy afterward and the only thing I have is a good credit score. Is this anyway to treat peoples illnesses? Chris Hedges speaks about the “primacy of profit”, it is what our society is running on and it’s running head-long into a wall of humanity. Let’s make you better and destroy your life, for profit. What a sick society. Everything is based on profit and if “they” can’t make money off of your situation you are marginalized out of existence. Die quickly my friends, die quickly.

Make this the litmus test for who deserves to lead this country. Anyone who will truly stand against the insurance and pharma industries to guarantee healthcare to everyone, shows they have their priorities straight. We need compassion at the steering wheel, whatever office it may be. This is a mindset that will cover a multitude of the problems in our society.
