The people of El Salvador and their international allies against irresponsible mining are celebrating a historic victory. After a long battle against global mining companies that were determined to plunder the country’s natural resources for short-term profits, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has voted to ban all metal mining projects.
This is a very positive story, in a very dark time. Hurray for the people of El Salvador, and their legislators!
I only wish U.S. legislators, just once, would put people and the environment ahead of the profits of corporations, especially extractive industries.
There is no such thing as "...responsible, sustainable mining." That is a definite oxymoron, like "peace through war".
Only a matter of time before the US involves itself aka "meddles" in this country to invalidate the will of the people to further the interests of the mining industry.
