In 'Historically Dubious' CPAC Speech, Pence Claims 'Freedom' Ended Slavery

Eoin Higgins, staff writer

Vice President Mike Pence on Friday said that "freedom" ended slavery and defeated Hitler—a claim that was derided as historically inaccurate by critics.

Speaking in front of a packed house at the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Pence said that "freedom"—an apparent stand-in for capitalism—was the reason for the major global and American victories of the past two centuries.

"It was a freedom, not socialism, that ended slavery, won two world wars, and stands today as the beacon of hope for all the world," Pence declared.

More than half of the total number of casualties are accounted for by the dead of the [Republic of China] and of the [Soviet Union] China 20,000,000; USSR 26,000,000 dead; US 419,400 dead; Poland 6,000,000; Philippine 557,000; Czechoslovakia 345,000; what is now Indonesia 4,000,000; France 600,000; Vietnam 2,000,000; Greece 600,000; Pence is a stunningly stupid person.

Depends on the definition of ‘freedom’. Freed from capitalist slavery then enslaved by capitalism?

Neither the US Civil War or other 19th century event ended slavery, the nature of slavery just evolved to the extent that there are more slaves in the world today than there were when the Civil War ended in 1865. Yes, that is due in part to exponential world population growth of the past century.

Damn right! Russia also put the breaks on the little man with a big ego, Empire loving Napoleon. “Strange” that the Nazis did not learn from this. And the USA is committing the same hubristic mistake except now the whole world is in danger. Those Russian winters can be brutal!

Honestly, to Americans “freedom” has only meant license to do as one pleases. The late, great James Baldwin pointed out that Americans talk ever so much of freedom and sex while knowing the least of either. Has it ever occurred to anyone that “freedom” might simply mean the right to choose one’s own limitations?

Eric Foner’s book, The Story of American Freedom is worth the read.

Also, capitalists figured out that they could enslave everyone.

This puppet knows nothing except what the Koch brothers put into his brain. Anyway, Trump has made sure that things will only get worse after he is gone if Pence is put in place. The United States has become a truly pathetic place with leadership of corrupt men who could care less about humanity.

As Lincoln put it, “We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing … Plainly the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of the word liberty; and precisely the same difference prevails today among us human creatures, even in the North, and all professing to love liberty. Hence we behold the processes by which thousands are daily passing from under the yoke of bondage, hailed by some as the advance of liberty, and bewailed by others as the destruction of all liberty.”

Remember, this genius believes that the earth was created in six days that the Garden of Eden is a real place, that Adam and Eve were real white blond people and that apples are evil fruit. Did I mention Noah and Moses. This cult apostle will buy into anything. Now I don’t think he really buys this, but it is a nice Walt Disney type of message to sell coal miners that are dying of black lung, for the cause you know. I would go on with my self righteous rant, but I use to belong to this tribe. I loved Ike and voted for Nixon twice, Given this crew of buffoons, I would probably vote for him again. Ezra Cummings is right we are better than this and we HAVE to return to normal.

That is actually IT, in a nut shell. The emerging northern capitalists were determined to destroy the slave based economic system of the South and did with the culmination of this resulting in the end of slavery. There was never any benevolence towards the enslaved involved, despite what today’s Yankee descendants would have us believe. Just the bloodiest switch from one massa class to another. Still no real movement on the racial front and here it is 154 years late, as in PAST DUE.

As I’ve written about in depth, the Republicans historically to this day routinely regurgitate the ‘slur’ word “socialism” in devious propagandistic ways to denigrate liberal tenets and Democrats in general. Pence is just another puppet preacher of this vilifying ad hominem - always based on the phony assumption conservatives have a monopoly on the protections guaranteed under our Constitution, like the principle of “freedom.” Now with Bernie in the race, Republican politicians will have aother field day smugly slandering him with the counterfeit “socialist” charge.

What a tragic joke our democracy has become when politicians like Pence think anything related to social justice and responsible social welfare is fundamentally a loss of our freedom, while concentrating 90% of income and wealth in the top 10% is no loss of freedom. This socialist smirching indoctrination by Republicans is fraudulent and mocks a fundamental social right of us all:

**Fiat justitia, ruat caelum."

"Justice be done, though the heavens fall."

I’ll let an ex-slave explain why slavery was not abolished - it only changed its form

“The difference between the white slave, and the black slave, is this: the latter belongs to ONE slave-holder, and the former belongs to ALL the slave-holders, collectively. The white slave has taken from his, by indirection, what the black slave had taken from him, directly, and without ceremony. Both are plundered, and by the same plunderers” - Frederick Douglass

Slavery became Jim Crow became mass incarceration, all in one continuous flow. All in Michelle Alexander’s book, “The New Jim Crow.”

Well as a socialist myself I regard “christians” such as Pence who babble on about “freedom”, “democracy” all the while promoting policies that undermine his own supposed faith to be hypocrites who conflate wealth accumulation as “freedom”. His notion is that “freedom” is to live as his ilk determines and that the size of your bank account is proof of ones “spirituality”. And they are willing to go to war over it, to enslave and murder you. This protestant dominating sector of American “christianity” has been at war since its inception.

Liberalism was the original ‘slur’ and now it’s socialism–my, oh my but we are actually making progress! Rather than seeing socialism as a slur we need to educate and agitate with regards to it. Capitalism is actually a contradiction when it comes to “democracy” because it creates inequality and both major parties buy into it.

Many people know that the US had far fewer casualties in WWII than Russia. When the numbers are put on a page as you have done here, they are staggering to contemplate. Human beings lose their humanity during war.

Pandering Pence and his criminally-minded boss have little regard for historical facts. They try to employ them to their advantage and usually as they do show how stupid they are, as you say. I wish tupPence would keep his ignorance to himself. What he says doesn’t change reality, but it can put inaccurate information into ignorant minds. Considering the audience, his speech was a blockbuster. He is not only “stunningly stupid”; he is super scary.

Capitalism - Socialism. Freedom - Slavery. Some people twist these words in the service of ideology to the extent that they cease to mean anything. 2019 - 1984. Knowledge, careful listening, understanding, and action are required to make things “normal” again. The “new normal” or whatever “normal” you choose. I’ll try Elijah Cumming’s “normal”.

It was the death of thousands of Union Soldiers fighting and killing Southern Bigoted Religious Fanatics like Pence, who used the Bible to justify their cruelty, that ended Slavery.

It was people like Fredrick Douglas who convinced Lincoln that Black Slaves should be fighting for their own Freedom.

It was the Emancipation Proclamation, an Executive Order, that unofficially brought an end to Slavery until the 13th Amendment made it officially illegal.

And it was thousands of Ex-Slaves entering the Civil War and skillfully fighting and defeating the bastards that whipped and tortured them.

It was the Ex-Slaves themselves, armed by Lincoln, that brought a bloody end to a disgusting inhumane CAPITALIST policy for making greater Profits.

Ending Slavery had nothing to do with “Freedom” Mr. Pence.

It was heartless bigots like you who supported the institution of Slavery just as you now support depriving Gay people of their Human Rights.
