In the Same Week, the US and UK Hide Their War Crimes by Invoking “National Security”

Glenn Greenwald

Colonel Ian Henderson was a British official dubbed “the Butcher of Bahrain” because of atrocities he repeatedly committed during the 30 years he served as chief security official of that Middle Eastern country. His reign of terror began when Bahrain was a British “protectorate” and continued when the post-“independence” Bahraini King retained him in the same position.

When they say National Security, what they really mean is THEIR SECURITY and this is nothing new, the U.S. Government has been hiding behind this false national security moniker for the last 100 years!

Sounds a great deal like "the ugly American" Edward Lansdale, whose career of international crimes on behalf of the CIA/MIC in the Philippines and Southeast Asia (1950s-70s) set new standards of brazen barbarity (including false-flag bombings etc.) and are documented in late chapters of Richard Drinnon's "Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building." And oh yeah, Lansdale too was showered with powers and honors and never faced a single victim or court.

Glenn, simply states the unremarkable truth:

“The core mindset now prevalent in both the U.S. and U.K. (is) hiding
their crimes from their own populations and the rest of the world:
disclosure of what we did will embarrass and shame us, cause anger
toward us, and thus harm our “national security.” As these governments
endlessly highlight the bad acts of those who are adverse to them, they
vigorously hide their own, thus propagandizing their publics into
believing that only They — the Other Tribe Over There — commit such
acts.”

And he then adds (or repeats) this truth:

“No healthy democracy can possibly function where this warped mindset
prevails: we are entitled to hide anything we do that makes us look bad
because making us look bad harms “national security,” and we are the
ones who make that decision without challenge. As the ACLU’s Jameel
Jaffer said:

To allow the government to suppress any image that might provoke
someone, somewhere, to violence would be to give the government sweeping
power to suppress evidence of its own agents’ misconduct. Giving the
government that kind of censorial power would have implications far
beyond this specific context.

But even more threatening than the menace to democracy is the
propagandzied public this mentality guarantees. A government that is
able to hide its own atrocities on “national security” grounds will be
one whose public endlessly focuses on the crimes of others while
remaining blissfully unaware of one’s own nation. That is an excellent
description of much of the American and British public, and as good an
explanation as any why much of their public discourse consists of little
more than proclamations that Our Side is Better despite the decades of
brutality, aggression and militarism their own side has perpetrated.”

However, Glenn unfortunately, does not provide any context or broader
narrative of what the real ‘symptomatic problem’ and actual CAUSE of
the U.S. and U.K. doing this is. He is simply showing the specifics of
the problem, but not ‘diagnosing’ — nor exposing the cancerous cause the
underLIES this inordinate secrecy and propaganda.

The real meaning of the U.S. and U.K. ‘acting like this’ is that they
are NOT “healthy democracies” at all — but Glenn does nothing here to explain
‘what they are acting like’ — and he does nothing to explain what
structure of government ‘acts like this’ — nor what the people should
recognize ‘their’ (sic) countries as, because of such clearly
anti-democratic actions.

What the U.S. and U.K. are clearly ‘acting like’ are not
“democracies” at all, but they are both acting like — and should be
‘called-out’ by the people — as parts of a Disguised Global (crony)
Capitalist EMPIRE.

This is the one problem I see in the otherwise wonderful individual
efforts of Glenn, Snowden, Assange, Manning, and all the other
whistle-blowers and truth tellers — that they do not put their efforts
of ‘outing’ and ‘exposing’ the ugly truth in the broader and more
publicly revealing context of “Exposing a Global Empire” HQed in our
former country and employing related elements of this global EMPIRE in
the U.K., Germany, France, the EU, Israel (which is the Empire’s virtual
‘border-fort’ in the Middle East), ECB, IMF, World Bank, NATO, and all
the other “apparatuses” of military hard powers, financial soft-powers,
extra-legal, media/propaganda, TNC corporate power, and political
deceits Vichy facade which the elite TCC (transnational capitalist classes)
employ to rule our whole world, as Robinson so clearly exposes here:

“The U.S. state is a key point of condensation for pressures from
dominant groups around the world to resolve problems of global
capitalism and to secure the legitimacy of the system overall. In this
regard, “U.S.” imperialism refers to the use by transnational elites of
the U.S. state apparatus to continue to attempt to expand, defend, and
stabilize the global capitalist system. We are witness less to a “U.S.”
imperialism per se than to a global capitalist imperialism. We face an
EMPIRE of global capital, headquartered, for evident historical reasons,
in Washington.” [Caps substituted for italics in original]

Robinson, William I. (2014-07-31). Global Capitalism and the Crisis
of Humanity (p. 122). Cambridge University Press. Kindle Edition.
As it might have been phrased in the Clinton era/error — “It’s the EMPIRE, stupid”

Yes, Shantlannada, as you note, "what they really mean is THEIR SECURITY" as a Disguised EMPIRE --- which security for the EMPIRE is never to be exposed as an Empire!

Security for a disguised Empire is to remain secret, disguised, camouflaged, hidden (like a growing cancer), etc, etc.

Yes, DrJack, you are a good diagnostician --- a virtual Dr. House --- in seeing through the disguise of the EMPIRE and recognizing and 'calling-it-out" as an "Empire-building" disease/cancer of "Empire of all our Maladies" ---- just as Phd/Dr. Bauman diagnoses our entire "ailing social order":

As Zygmunt Bauman hauntingly puts it, “In the case of an ailing social order, the absence of an adequate diagnosis…is a crucial, perhaps decisive, part of the disease.”13

Berman, Morris (2011-02-07). Dark Ages America: The Final Phase of Empire (p. 22). Norton. Kindle Edition.

Yes, the disease is the cancer of the deeply hidden tumor of metastasizing cancer of Empire, and the cure for this hidden "big E" is just the same a s the cure for the "big C", which nobody dared to talk about when it struck the physical body of a loved one in the 1950's. But now Americans recognize, test for, and willingly treat 'the big C' by openly 'calling it out' as Cancer and working with doctors to expunge and if necessary 'excise' the tumor ---- and we Americans today must be just as open, honest, and pro-active in 'calling-out', properly diagnosing and treating this cancer of Empire in our body-politic.

Shining a light on this cancer of Empire in our political body is as effective as sunlight shining on a VEMPIRE.
