The key words in this are “net-zero emissions.” Net-zero means a balancing of input and output. Maybe this is a first step that needs to happen very quickly - in the next couple of years.
Plus, it matters how net-zero is achieved. For many large corporations and businesses it means buying carbon credits that allow them to continue to pollute while passing off their responsibility to reduce or eliminate their carbon (or all greenhouse gas) emission on to some other entity.
But being carbon neutral is NOT enough. The real contribution is to be carbon zero, no carbon emissions as all.
Further, we should be working to drawdown carbon and other GHGs out of the atmosphere to where it reaches levels that help return the Earth’s ecosystems to close to equilibrium.
1.5C is already baked into the system because of climate inertia. If we had zero emissions today, the planet would keep warming for decades.
