While I can list many issues I had with Obama and his administration, I will say that the “No Drama Obama” approach served the nation and him well. Our current toddler-in-chief, wearing his lack of impulse control on his sleeves and leaking from his nostrils, is a hazard to geopolitical stability throughout the world. If anyone else on this forum has studied cults, they know exactly what I am thinking…

The Saudi Arabia angle opens the possibility that the US engineered a fake peace overture from the Saudis with the Iraqi PM acting as intermediary simply to lure Soleimani to his death.

At this point, it makes an unholy kind of sense by Trumpian and Pompean standards.

Anyone who hasn’t been in a coma for the last thirty years should recognize the “saving American lives” and “deterring the influence of Iran” as more of the same phony bullshit excuses for more war and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that Trump’s actions and evermore unhinged threats will have, and already have had, the entirely the opposite effect. When you add in the fact that Trump and his goons are doing their best to withhold the intel on this mess from even Congress, the stench becomes unbearable. This is the American Empire at its sleaziest and bloodthirsty worst.

Not getting what it wants, the baby throws a tantrum.

Well reasoned, Skeptic. Given the Saudi-Israeli connection/alliance and both wanting the destruction of the Iranian regime and to reduce all Shia influence, and the mbs-ordered heinous and premeditated set-up murder of Jamal Kashoggi, your proposition is entirely plausible and even very likely. Israel did reportedly “provide the co-ordinates” of general Soleimani’s motorcade and that itself is a strong link! Thanks!

The bottom line is that no one – our allies or the enemies we might negotiate with – knows WTF Trump foreign policy is. This “maximum pressure” campaign now seems to have no end game outside of war. That would put Israel’s fingerprints all over it. Israel is itching to wipe out Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. They’re overconfident and crazy enough to go scorched earth and thus, guarantee pariah status for themselves for generations to come. And Pompeo just wants the rapture.

It has been reported that out of sheer confusion, the Saudi’s really were trying to reach out to Iran. A regional war will put Saudi oil infrastructure in the crosshairs from multiple directions, even from within their native Shiite community of 2 million. So let’s add up the possible locations the US troops might have fight in:

Kuwait
Saudi Arabia
Lebanon
Iraq
Iran
Syria
Israel

The logical short term response will be that the PMF will continue to be the major military presence in the country. Muqtada al-Sadr has already called for his militias to re-form. An increased military advisory role for Iran is a given.

Iraq can offer protective escorts for the Americans from the embassy to the airport for the next 48 - 72 hours. After that, the compound can be surrounded and essential services withheld. Military personnel who do not evacuate within that time frame may be required to walk home if U.S. aircraft are no longer allowed to utilize Iraqi airspace, which was also part of the parliamentary decree.

The U.S. provocation of the protests in Iraq seemed deliberately designed to create chaos, which the administration probably thought they could exploit to their political advantage. Their dangerous game has come back to bite them in the ass - again. If the pentagon was as shocked at the assassination as reported, it makes you wonder whether they were even informed before the CIA carried it out. Trump ALWAYS has an answer to “how could this get any worse”.

And these truths are so elusive, so difficult for the majority of Americans to understand.

I am trying to understand the logic of trump on this one, esp since he campaigned on withdrawing all the troops from the mid-east. Now I knew that was a lie. But what makes him think he has the right to demand that Iraq let our troops stay? And to hurt Iraq if our troops left? I know he thinks the oil should be ours by right of conquest, but his temper tantrum is way out of line.
