I taught sixth grade for many years and as part of our American History class I showed the movie “Matewan”, the story of West Virginian coal miners trying to organize and the violence perpetrated on them by owners and backed up by the US government.
It was the courage of those organizers and workers who were so desperate that brought the middle class into existence in this country. And it was Ronald Reagan who used his folksy charm to convince many American workers that unions were their enemy. He could really pull the wool over people’s eyes. And so began the steep decline of the middle class and the steep rise of inequality.
It is encouraging to read that more people are recognizing the truth of that old adage that there is strength in numbers, and kudos to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and other candidates for putting it into their platforms.
