The imperialist neocons infesting the Trump administration, and the orange-faced joke of a president himself, may think they can invent their own reality through propaganda, as Bush’s “brain” Karl Rove used to claim about the Bush/Cheney administration, but when it comes to Latin America, they fail to realize how deeply the people of that continent loath and resent the US and its colonial-era Monroe Doctrine.
Is Dave Lindorff ahead of himself here? I surely like his representation that the coup has failed, but I don’t hear anything like that at all from the US. Instead they’re discussing going in militarily. I detest that our neotard libs are backing a US coup (let’s get real, this is not a Venezuelan led coup attempt) and for all the same old reason: oil. Oh, and also to use up some of the grotesque resources that taxpayers provide to the MIC war machine.
It’s not a coup if it’s an invasion.
I very much agree with you Dave Lindorff. I do not know if there has ever been a more pathetic “legitimate president” argument made than was for made for Guaidó, and yes, 50 governments look like stooges and fools.
To those who may think writing what I wrote on Tuesday evening was “getting ahead of myself,” I would say this: When a main leader of the opposition, standing next to Guaido on the bridge, joins in callig for a coup, but hours later holes up in the Chilean Embassy with wife and kids, and when 25 soldiers who initially supported Guaido’s call to arms turned themselves in to the Brazilian embassy seeking asylum, and when reports in Telasur and Al Jazeera said that the airport supposedly taken over by rebels was actually not and was firmly in the hands of the Venezuelan military, I figured it was over before it began.
If you’ve been reading media outside of the US and Britain, you’d know that most of the protests by anti-Maduro people are very small, but exaggerated by our complicit corporate media reporters, and that mass support among Venezuela’s majority of poor people is strong but not reported, it’s easy to see why this coup was a fake from the start, relying on propaganda to try and kickstart a coup. But the premise of that plot was that everyone in Venezuela wants Maduro overthrown and replaced by a US puppet. It could be Maduro is unpopular, but that’s a far cry from saying people want a US puppet regime, much less a bitter civil war.
Even countries run by fascists like Brazil do not dare send troops to back the US. They’d have a full-blown rebellion on their hands in their own countries if they did so.
The opposition to US meddling is both deep and wide across Latin America. John Bolton is blowing smoke or smoking dope when he says “the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well.” Actually, it is over and dead RIP.

As well as virtually the entire US corporate media, which bought the coup story and cheer-led it from the get-go.
It my opinion and that of others I have read, that Guaidó is now seen as a liability by the USA and the CIA who would be worth more to US interests dead.
I would not be surprised in the slightests were some bullet to find him with the USA immediately blaming the Maduro Government and using it as an excuse to intervene with troops so as to defend “freedom and liberty” in some operation with a title like “Operation Justice for Guaido”
Exactly right. More from DLindorff!
And, it would be poetic justice if when “Operation Justice For Guaido” commences and the invasion starts, Russian and Chinese military arrive “To Save The Day.” Like Mighty Mouse.
Dave, you are well ahead of most CD writers and give
authentic journalism the wisdom to look truth in the face;
while the Deep State has egg on its face–thanks for
Thanks, Dave Lindorff, for this great article. I really appreciate hearing the truth.
How rich that these fools are retreating to the Spanish embassy, seeing as socialists just won the election in Spain! And who knows who the men in military garb really are? Columbian para-military? Various spooks? The mainstream media have shown their true colors once again, as have the Democrats and other allies/lackeys of neoliberalism. If they want us to support them against Trump, they might want to show some daylight between themselves and him when it comes to anti-democratic coups abroad. This is sickening but predictable. Blood for oil all over again.
The NYT’s was reporting that Guaido had taken a military base-----total fiction-----The people of Venezuela have a right to decide who rules not the US . Drop the sanctions NOW. Why is the US imposing sanctions on Venezuela? Because the people of Venezuela believe in the COMMONS----the people in Venezuela understand they have a RIGHT to share in the wealth of their nation. SUPPORT INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM–SUPPORT THE COMMONS!
I only have time for the headline and all I have to say is “Good”.
It certainly looks like Maduro’s government was thinking something similar, as evidenced by Guaido’s continued survival and freedom.
A force for good, baby!
“Instead they’re discussing going in militarily.”
Easier said than done. How? Drop bombs on Venezuelan civilians? This is not Syria, whose dead civilians the MSM can keep off the US sheeple’s radar (unless supposedly gassed by Assad). Too close to home. The methods Abrams and others used in Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc. won’t work here. Other choice is less palatable, sending in US troops to die for a “faux” cause, Obama already tried to grease the wheels on this one, calling Venezuela a threat to US security to justify US sanctions. But even a gullible US public doesn’t buy this one, from a military threat perspective. Only thing Pompeo and fellow thugs have going in their favor is no political opposition, but that could change as the election looms closer.
Excellent article Dave!
I’ll second that.
