Just in Time for the July 4 Break, Congress Imposes ‘Colonialism at Its Worst’ on Puerto Rico

John Nichols

Shortly after the distribution of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Paine began writing the series of “American Crisis” essays that inspired Americans to maintain their arduous rebellion against colonialism. “We fight not to enslave, but to set a country free, and to make room upon the earth for honest men to live in,” argued Paine in a series of pamphlets that concluded: “Our citizenship in the United States is our national character. Our citizenship in any particular state is only our local distinction.

"...Only 11 Senate Democrats joined (Bernie) in opposing the measure.
Along with a number of Republicans who wanted to be even tougher on Puerto Rico."

At this point they're virtually All,
(except for Bernie and his True Believers)
as George would say,
part of the "...Same Club and We Ain't in It,"

Matters are never simply "black" or "white." Truth--in action--more closely simulates a spectrum.

One might place states under direct military siege at the extreme end of the spectrum in that zone that signifies ZERO Democracy and/or human rights, with Greece/Puerto Rico/Flint, Michigan slightly apart from those militarized zones since they are essentially colonized by Big Money Interests.

The thing is, most of us are not that far from the status of these places since THIS is what the elites have planned.

After all, if the Page and Gilens Study proves that citizens' wishes are almost NEVER translated into active or official policy; and if a supposedly Democratic Liberal President is pushing for the TPP and TIPP which will absolutely NULLIFY citizens' rights; then this idea of government being made legitimate through the consent of the governed is already breached.... and like rising flood waters is moving quickly from the undersea/under siege segment of the spectrum to cities near you and me. Quickly!

Watch for falling debris!

This is just another example of our government doing what's best for the 1% over what is best for the 99%.

What will happen when the citizens try to take control of the United States will make brutal dictators actions seem calm.

I agree that "this is what the elites have planned." It does appear that there is no awareness that the continuing, blatant moves being made by elites (pro-fracking, pro-TTP, pro-austerity) with total disregard for people or the planet. Are they that clueless? Or do they think we're that stupid? People are noticing - all over the world. People are protesting - all over the world. MSM cannot stop this conversation. I am grateful to still be alive to watch revolution unfold.

This is precisely what Naomi Klein discusses in her book: The Shock Doctrine. It's neoliberalism on the march.
