"Just Like Catcalling": Dismissing Ben Shapiro's Debate Offer, Ocasio-Cortez Says "Men With Bad Intentions" Don't Deserve a Response

Jake Johnson, staff writer

After right-wing provocateur and pseudo-intellectual Ben Shapiro made an almost certainly illegal offer earlier this week to donate $10,000 to New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's campaign if she agreed to a public debate on the merits of socialism, Ocasio-Cortez compared Shapiro's "unsolicited" offer to "catcalling" and argued bad-faith actors like Shapiro don't deserve a response.

No doubt that Shapiro will claim the mantle of victimhood for being dissed. Go Alexandria!

#3

Shapiro doesn’t “debate”, he yells and screams and shouts out false facts. Though he is not as talented as the chief American propagandist Rush Limbaugh, he loves to demonize anyone who supports the 99%. That’s why he gets the big bucks.
If a proper debate with Shapiro were held, it would most likely end his career as viewers would realize that he is nothing more than a paid corporate shill. For this reason alone, you will never see him participate in an organized and balanced debate.

While Shapiro is certainly a “man with bad intentions” and a racist, sexist, Zionist, elitist pig, IMO AO-C should have taken this on. It would have forced her to clarify her positions in a highly-public “politicized” environment. Also, she would have had to prepare, rather than just shoot from the hip.

It would be relatively easy to assign a staffer to put together a list of Shapiro’s many lies and misstatements and she could have helped to clearly define democratic socialism for a broader audience.

Finally, people are looking for progressives to stand up to the filth that is (s)electoral politics. AO-C will now be accused of cowardice or at least wilting under fire.

Also, she could have issued a challenge to debate a Duopoly neoliberal rather than a fascist “pundit” and eschewed the 10K offer as an attempt to bribe her.

AO-C is young, but she’ll soon learn that U.S. (s)electoral politics is a sewer and there’s no way she can stay above it.

It really is time to shun the right.
This is what that looks like.

#6

US politics are a sewer Tom…a cesspool of scum and pigs like shapiro, but that doesn’t mean "there’s no way Alexandria cannot rise above it…that’s what she is about in her actions so-far and we must support her to make sure she does rise above the D-R parade of sellout scum…I think Alexandria made the decision right for her…the potential for a bad encounter is too great at this time in her position, not yet elected…she will “debate” others in forums more equal, with great results, I predict…just sayin…

#7

You are just so damn wrong. Ocasio-Cortez got it right. Shapiro is no more than a right wing catcaller who deserves no response. Let him go to Ann Arbor with his NYT buddy. She took on party leadership in NY. That does not suggest cowardice to anyone but you.

#8

I’m sure that’s her calculation. I hope it works.

#9

I did not accuse her of cowardice. I directly said she will be accused. You ought to respond to what’s written, but I guess trolls don’t need to do that.

#10

She is correct. Go girl go!

#11

When will there be a big to-do called: "Let’s talk about GREED CAPITALISM" and how it is destroying the economic freedom of all?!

#12

And he IS a super troll, Tom.

#13

Deciding not to debate probably was indeed a good idea. Debating shows skills, not necessarily who is right. Dissing ability that Shapiro was said above to have can actually mean attacking minor flaws in the representation of honest fact, gaining points in a debate.
But debate is the method that the Congress uses to pass laws. And in elections, there is a need for it. I hope she starts working on this skill.
And I hope she refrains from calling people “good” or “bad” and sticks to issues. Let the media hurl personal attacks. Ad hominem.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez well states the case for making progress equally for all via the purpose of government as stated by the Founders on July 4, 1776 without need of this right-wing fanatic barking up all of the wrong trees. Ocasio-Cortez speaks well on the broad public stage of the big picture of life in our land that does not include the ever expanding inclusion of the American Dream that up until Republican trickledown economics of 40-plus years ago ever enlarged the apple pie for all. Not since FDR have I heard a Democrat so effectively state the need to make progress for all via government of the people, by the people and for the people. Here word in brief echo with the call FDR issued in his 1936 nomination acceptance speech that challenged common folks of the land to meet their Rendezvous with Destiny with such determined effort an effective that they are well remember in history as the Greatest Generation.

I never heard of Ben Shapiro but it sounds like he may be trying to get some publicity for himself. Seems like a publicity stunt. The right wing at this point seems totally irrational and wrapped up in conspiracy theories and hate. What is the point of a debate if rational thought is thrown out the window. And why give the right a chance to debate about socialism. That just puts the left on the defensive. How about debating about what ICE and the border patrol have been doing. Or about banning people from this country who are Muslim. Or about derogatory comments on the IQs of notable blacks like LeBron James, Don Lemon, and Maxine Waters and the protests of black NFL football players during the playing of the national anthem. Does Shapiro support this stuff?

#16

I know…anyone who disagrees with you two’s Enlightenment is purely off in their Thought…Right?

I mean no clarification of ideas, shooting from the hip, accusations of cowardice (you made the statement up), just a step away from succumbing to the bribes of the Duopoly…ad nausueum…

Jeez give Ocasio-Cortez the courtesy of a Chance to Fight before you shoot her legs out.

And give her the CREDIT she deserves for the COURAGE to STAND WHERE SHE STANDS.

Talk about trolling, you two are rich…

#17

Looks like Ms Ocasio-Cortez is very quick on her feet! That “cat-calling” metaphor was spot on for the situation. She seems like someone who could deflate a heckler with a withering glance.

#18

So typical of his type. Won’t you jump at the $10,000. Won’t you do anything I want you to do for $10,000. They think money buys everything. A debate should be about people who have passion for their issues and causes. Not something that is just bought and paid for talking. Everything in the US seems to be about money and how we can use it to corrupt everything and everyone.

#19

Well said. If Ocasio-Cortez ever gets any political power in the democratic party, like Bernie Sanders, there is no doubt in my mind the people that control the democratic party will throw her under the bus.In the meantime, like Bernie, she will be used by the corrupt and more effective evil party elite to further their nefarious agenda.

The Ben Shapiro described by TJ and others here doesn’t sound like someone worth
engaging with to even put down.

I don’t really know, but I do think that maybe cooperating in any way with someone like
this would be a mistake. And my feeling would be that accommodating him in any way
could suggest to New Yorkers that Shapiro has something worthwhile to say in a debate.
From his profile, I don’t think I’d like to see him given that kind of credit.

Plus, I think this is obviously a very forceful male, very prepared to be as nasty as he can –
and I think maybe leave that to Bernie to do – if it really needs doing.

Or, would Cuomo take him on? Cuomo isn’t going to defend democratic socialism, for one point.

Maybe Bill Maher would take Shapiro on if this becomes a big issue in NY?
Certainly Maher is far enough to the left to respond to what Shapiro seems to be …

TJohnson: While Shapiro is certainly a “man with bad intentions” and a racist, sexist, Zionist, elitist pig, IMO AO-C should have taken this on.

Emphyrio: US politics are a sewer Tom…a cesspool of scum and pigs like shapiro, but that doesn’t mean "there’s no way Alexandria cannot rise above it… and that’s what she is about in her actions so-far and we must support her to make sure she does rise above the D-R parade of sellout scum…I think Alexandria made the decision right for her…the potential for a bad encounter is too great at this time in her position, not yet elected…she will “debate” others in forums more equal, with great results, I predict…just sayin…

My last thought is that Alexandria doesn’t need to defend democratic socialism against fascism.

It’s Capitalism that democratic socialism needs to defeat.
