Keeping Coal Out of Oakland

Keeping Coal Out of Oakland

Irene Gutierrez

Oakland, California, long overshadowed by its neighbor across the Bay, San Francisco, has recently emerged as a magnet for young technology companies and progressive green businesses. Now, a private developer’s backroom deal with Utah coal-producing counties may sign the city on to house the West Coast’s largest coal export terminal, throwing Oakland back into the dark ages by shipping an outdated and dying commodity.

I am all for the quick phase-out of coal mining and burning, but the west coast activists, who have apparently never seen coal except in a rock collection or something, should stick to the real reasons why (AGW) and stay away from unsubstantiated reasons like coal transport having health hazards from release of dust. West Virginia and Pennsylvania would have ben long wiped-out if this was the case.
