Kerry’s Next Challenge: NATO, Ukraine, and Russia

Katrina vanden Heuvel

The nuclear agreement with Iran provides ample proof of Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s remarkable commitment and skill in waging diplomacy. In an era when the Pentagon dominates our foreign policy and military options are too often trotted out as first responses, he has resuscitated the United States’ power to lead, pressure and negotiate, a capacity too often denigrated as “soft power.”

Nothing is more important than keeping swords in their scabbards, unless, of course, they can be beaten into plowshares...

Can Kerry do anything without first checking with Vickie Nuland?

What is next for Ms Vanden Heuvel? An article on what great environmentalists the Koch bothers are because they might decide to clean up the piles of petrcoke they have laying aound the country?

This is a puerile article. Under the watch of Mr kerry The USA helped create the crisis in Libya. They supported Israel in their slaughter of peoples in Gaza. They funded and supported ISIS and stoke conflict in Syria. This Iranian negotiation was all bluster as there never was a program to develop Nuclear weapons in Iran.

The Coup in the Ukraine which led to this Civil war was of US manufacture.

It does not matter how many layers of lipstick one tries to layer on , Mr kerry is still a war pig. He still has war on his menu and suggesting he a remarkable man of peace is like ordering a diet coke with your triple quarter pounder with cheese and extra large fries because one is "health concious"

If Kerry's alleged diplomacy skills are that significant, why was this Neanderthal just promoted to a position of significance? Seems to me this is like a Democratic President appointing a right wing Supreme Court Justice and leaving the public to genuflect on why 95% of Supreme Court decisions favor the big business community (corporations) over human rights:

"The voices calling for a new Cold War — or worse — with Russia are growing louder. “If you want to talk about a nation that could pose an existential threat to the United States, I’d have to point to Russia,” said Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., at Senate hearings on his nomination to be the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dunford listed Russia as “the greatest threat” to U.S. national security, which will surely startle those old enough to remember 9/11."

The guy would be better named Dumbford!

A cruel irony to see "Breed Love" instead breed war in support of Victoria seeking ever Nu Lands to exploit through martial campaigns of imperial acquisition.

Please check out the audio interview that I linked too. Professor Cohen talks in detail about the emergence of multipolar world, the Iran peace agreement and the new cold war with Russia.

I would use different words to describe Kerry. Pompous, clueless, arrogant, come to mind. His one great accomplishment seems to be divorcing a 300m woman so he can marry a 900m woman.

It took 60 years for the USA to officially admit they were behind the 1953 coup d'etat in Iran that overthrew the beloved Mosaddegh and installed the hated Shah and his SAVAK death squads. And even after that, most Americans know nothing about it, or why Iranians hate Americans... (it's an interesting story, how Teddy Roosevelt's grandson Kermit ran CIA 'Operation Ajax' to overthrow the elected Prime Minister to get control of Iranian oil back. Also, 'Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf's dad trained the initial SAVAK death squads that kept the Shah in power, decades before his son Jr. smashed the Iraqi Army in 1990-1991).

There will be clueless Americans for 6 more decades that insist the US did not covertly work to overthrow the elected Government of Ukraine and unleash this civil war. Too bad the UN Charter left so many loopholes for 'superpowers' to meddle around the planet unleashing death, misery and chaos.

But don't you see? How can the US continue to do all that you described if it endangers itself by making an enemy of Russia? Kerry's being realistic: offend not the one nation that could hit back so that the Empire could've a free - or relatively free - hand elsewhere. A diet coke does make that triple quarter pounder with cheese and large fries less dangerous though, admittedly, it does not make Kerry a man of peace.

John Kerry would serve the world better by staying in Washington and telling the idiots there to shut the eff up and not make trouble for him (and the rest of the world). The ROTW can cope with its internal squabbles quite happily without the USA making them worse.

What is that neocon whore Nuland still doing in the US State Department. Somebody get her out of there. Kerry could do it with the stroke of a pen. What the hell is holding this up. If the Queen of Hell becomes the President, Nuland could become Secretary of State. Oh, what the f***, homo sapiens will be extinct within the next 20 or 30 years anyway.
