Killing for Credibility: A Look Back at the 1999 NATO Air War on Serbia

Killing for Credibility: A Look Back at the 1999 NATO Air War on Serbia

Brett Wilkins

This month marks the 20th anniversary of Operation Allied Force, NATO’s 78-day air war against Yugoslavia. It was a war waged as much against Serbian civilians—hundreds of whom perished—as it was against Slobodan Milošević’s forces, and it was a campaign of breathtaking hypocrisy and selective outrage. More than anything, it was a war that by President Bill Clinton’s own admission was fought for the sake of NATO’s credibility.

Brett Wilkins: Thank you for this historical synopsis with documentation.

This can serve as history lesson to fill in the blanks left by textbook corporations. Determining HOW to make our government cough up the truth will require the sort of ‘issue’ movements we value such as Justice, Climate Change and pollution, Congressional Corruption, Congressional Accountability, and on and on… but thats where ‘we the people’ come in. Not easy, but definitely the good fight.

Hey Brett – Thank you for such a concise history of this gross injustice of state terror perpetrated by the US Government and NATO nations. As MLK said the our government is the greatest purveyors of violence (and terror) in the world. Is there any reason to think this has changed? Or, would change under a democrat? Democrats, after all, are historically the ones who prosecute more war. On a related topic, 911 was a psyop to gain backing for endless war. Now our lapdog media are lying to us about Venezuela.

To those that continue to live in that workd of delusion wherein they feel the USA does not forment this violence and conflict the WORLD over and only reacts out of concern when such violence erupts , this article yet more evidence that the dirty hand of the USA is behind violence the World over.

By the way what this author failed ot mention is that one source of Arms being used to arm terrorists in Syria are of US Origin and funnled through the KLA. Added to that many members of the KLA joined those “pro democracy” forces trying to oust Asaad.

The USA is actively using the same “recruit fundamentalists abroad and send them in to topple a countries Government” to this day.

Perhaps Clinton wanted to clear the arsenal of old bombs to make way for new ones.

Just the next domino on the list. Syria. Then Iran.

Thank you. Keep fighting the good fight!

Thanks. We indeed see history repeating itself, replete with false pretenses, in the US aggression against Venezuela. Hopefully this time it won’t end with bombs.

And, probably, Venezuela as well. Our “Foreign Policy”, since the Spanish-American War, and especially since the latter stages of WWII, has been an unbroken succession of misery, terror, death and destruction for millions of people around the world. Very few of them represented any threat to us at all.

We need to get out of the Empire business. Yesterday

NATO has metastacized exponentially since its creation, to the point at which it has been provoking wars to justify its continued growth. It needs to be at least downsized,
or dissolved completely.

CD: thanks for publishing this. It’s very important for people to understand this history - especially as the Empire and its propagandists gears up for more war.

What was Yugoslavia’s big crime? Yugoslavia had been more independent than other former Soviet Socialist Republics. So when the USSR collapsed, Yugoslavia didn’t. It remained at least a nominally socialist country. The US as the hegemon of global capital, would not tolerate that.
