Lest We Forget

Bill Moyers

In this web exclusive, Bill Moyers and four historians dissect the big lie Trump rode to power: the Birther lie. Nell Painter, historian and Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, at Princeton University; Khalil Gibran Muhammad, professor of history, race and public policy at Harvard Kennedy School;

Every time I consider the LIES, the full on departure from democracy by these rabid right wing extremists, I always think of Justice Alito and Scalia and how they changed our nation with their decisions. Hopefully we all recall them and keep them close to our decision making today and tomorrow and forever. WE the PEOPLE, cannot be free until we make our Supreme Court and our Congress represent us, the citizens, over Corporations. LIES from any leader, weakness in true democracy from any leader, only stifles and demeans all Women, Men, Children in these United States. It will never create a free, democratic nation. We must demand our rightful place in this union of states. We must demand our rights to VOTE, to HEALTHCARE for ALL. We must do it. Don't leave it to someone else. Take action.

Its real clear to me that the ginger pig is all he seems to be - a pathological liar, ego-driven thin-skinned narcissist and fool - without moral compass or common decency as well as tool and shill for extreme wealth above all else except the agenda the r'con's have been salivating for and he plays lap-dog for.

That said, the establishment Dem machine and DINO sellout collaborators he "beat" also serve many of the same odious forces and vast wealth to greater or lesser degree. We have hit political rock-bottom to say the least...............

Ya think I'm too opinionated?........................

There is no question that the Democratic Party promotes the same corporate agenda that Trump does. The greatest difference is the GOP's overt corporate pandering and racism vs. the Democrats subtle corporate pandering and racism.

Does anyone else remember in 2008 when Hillary Clinton suggested that Obama was not truly Christian? When, in an interview upon being asked if Obama was really a Christian, she replied: "Well, he SAYS he is"...Or how about when the Clinton campaign in 2008 circulated, widely, a photo of Obama dressed in Middle Eastern garb? Or when the DNC as recently as 2015-2016 attempted to smear Bernie for being Jewish, or implied that he was racist?

Bill Moyers is somebody I used to admire, but he has turned into just another liberal fear-monger. In another column recently, he mentioned Trump's small hands. When did it become okay for sanctimonious liberals to disparage the appearances of others?

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing.

#6

Balderdash! Trump is a creation of the media establishment. Period.

Moyers divinity Christian education clearly influences his opinions, but those opinions are founded on a political structure that no longer exists. His evidence is rife with examples that require one to believe there is a sound, godly system upon which "We the People..." can trust. The truth is that the land of the free and home of the brave no longer exists. "What we are experiencing is very exceptional…we are entering into a period which has no equivalent in the past."

#7

Constitutionally speaking, "We the People..." do not have a "right" to vote. Also, Supreme Court is powerless. Whatever policies they decide can be completely ignored by the Congress or the Senate.

#8

Your mind is most easily blown.

#9

Your ideas are a wee bit "out there." (from your last post)

Sort of....Sort of.....Sort of......

This article is profoundly eye-opening. It brought a barrage of images to my mind's eye of even further back than the days of slavery. How about the days when the "white man" landed on our shores and decimated the Native population? Bill Moyers "sort of" is saying that we have never moved past the Southern mentality that the white man is superior. Well, I "sort of" am saying, the white man has always considered himself superior--to everyone! Where did this come from?

#11

Thank you Ray for pointing out that both parties LIED, and did their best with their MSM Judases aiding them, to sell those lies to all Americans.

A long-time admirer of Moyers, I was expecting more from this article based on its title "Lest We Forget". Yes, Trump fed (likely pre-existent) dislike / mistrust of Obama with a lie. Yet, while it may have increased his standing in the eyes of the more easily persuadable and thus may have contributed to his nomination, the influence of that on Trump's election overall was likely negligible.

Just how influential was that then, for example, compared with the documented Clinton campaign (and friendly media) efforts to help elevate Trump's candidacy to thereby inhibit more electable GOP standard-bearers? How much was due to the media's constant attention to Trump's every word even as they gave zero coverage of Sanders?

And how does Trump lie about Obama really compare with the clear antipathy towards Clinton - itself significantly a function of her neo-con to neo-lib political history, her clear but denied ties to Wall Street?

In the end, Trump was chosen by roughly 27% of the eligible voters; Clinton was chosen by about a percent more, despite her massive advantages in establishment support, including the support of much of the GOP establishment itself. Those advantages didn't translate to an electoral college win, and many of us suspect that the main reason she lost and Trump won was in fact because so many voters could not bring themselves for a continuance and amplification of the global imperialist corporate-led order that Clinton represented.

How anyone outside of the usual xenophobic-angry extremist base could actually vote for Trump will remain somewhat a mystery; though we're told that a fair number of regular folk simply wanted to blow up the system with the Trump card. That so many could not vote for Clinton and the "New Dems" who long ago abandoned there interests is no mystery at all.

So I hope Bill Moyers will not forget THAT part.

#13

You nailed it. Democrat neo-liberalism is so divorced from the needs and issues of what used to be their base that they point the finger of blame for Trump at straw men and ignore their own duplicity in his election. It is time to stop the whining and hand wringing and reinvent that dismal wreck of a political party.

#14

Do the Obama's look the least bit offended by Trump in the photograph used in the article? I mean, talk about grinning ear to ear. It's all politics and in the end, the joke is on all of us. There is one political party. The rest is just theatre.

#15

We need to take a serious, truthful and hasty look at whether the Dem party can be reformed. I think we'll find it can't. Either Democratic-Socialist "tea party" forms to take over the party or or a Democratic-Socialist "tea party" forms to split off from the party. Either way lets get started!

I've got really bad news for Moyers. Barack Obama's birth certificate, that he resisted supplying, is very very fishy. It's says right at the bottom: Form 2001. The claims Obama's grandmother made about him being born in Kenya are what started this whole thing on Wayne Madsen Reports (ex-NSA agent.)

So it's some kind of a reproduction from the state of Hawaii. Where's his original? It doesn't exist. This forces everyone to trust that Obama's state did not print this thing out as a favor. To me it makes sense. The See-Eye-Aye, BO's old employer always wants compromised individuals with phony backgrounds so they have leverage over them. There is no way that Barack Obama, aka. Agent Barry Soetoro was a constitutional law professor. An IRS agent had a website claiming that none of Barry's tax returns make any sense. He dropped out of Occidental Spook College in So. Calif and suddenly was traveling on Indonesian and British passports as Barry Soetoro to Pakistan. All his educational and attendance records are sealed at Occidental, Harvard and Columbia.

(Barry Soetoro is what his British passport says; British Kenya used to be a Oil company concern which his father worked for Mobile and died mysteriously in an auto accident.) Anyway, Barry's story doesn't add up and it's clear his background was invented, which the company does all the time for operatives.

Why Bill Moyer continues to beat this dead horse is a mystery to me. Even Obama's resume at the University of Chicago says he worked for BIC, bank of international commerce, a known See-Eye-Aye front company. We as taxpayers, have a right to know who we were voting for. Trump was right to question Obama's very fishy story.

#17

Not at all. Your post are great. I greatly enjoy reading them.

#18

Seriously? That is your reply. Since when did you see THIS CONGRESS ever ignore any decision from THIS COURT? Give me a break.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Joseph Goebbels, MiniProp for Hitler’s Third Reich
1897-1945

"The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way through, carrying even the mob with him by force of his personality. But when the field is nationwide, and the fight must be waged chiefly at second and third hand, and the force of personality cannot so readily make itself felt, then all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre Т the man who can most easily adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum.
* "The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
