'Make Peace Great Again': Ahead of NATO Summit, Anti-Trump Protest Draws Thousands in Brussels

Julia Conley, staff writer

Carrying signs proclaiming "Make Peace Great Again," thousands marched through the streets of Brussels this weekend to protest this week's upcoming NATO summit and President Donald Trump's scheduled appearance at the meeting.

Twitler is impervious to shame. Ridicule is much more powerful.

#3

So, do you feel that NATO is a force for good in the world and Trump questioning U.S. participation is wrong?

#4

Trump demeans what he is incapable of controlling.

NATO has become nothing but a tool to promote Neo-Colonialism by The old Colonial Nations. Under the guise of “fighting terror” and “self defense” they are extending their tentacles to all corners of the Earth so as to ensure continued Coporate dominance of a given nations resources.

Colombia is now becoming a partner nnation. NATO will use Colombia to leapfrog across Latin America and annex those nations into their sphere of interest. NATO will work to ensure Governments in power in Latin America are Corporate friendly and willing to surrender their resources to those Corporations.

NATO is in Colombia so as to ensure China does not gain any influence in the region. Just as they did in Libya NATO member nations will sponsor subversives in Latin American countries and then use the cover of “defending human rights” or “Self defense of a member nation” so as to take out any Governments that should decide to chart an independent course.

When the herd of sheep aka the American people finally get off their anti-depressants, booze, television, theme parks, and other leashes, maybe they too will rise up with protests against Trump, the GOP, and military.

#7

A couple thousand European leftists marching in the streets in support of Hamas, Socialism, Cuba and the UN while aiming their vitriol at the USA. I just wish we would pull out of NATO and let the Europeans fund their own defense.

#8

EU better off without US, particularly under Trump. High time the arrogant US was isolated by rest of world.

#9

Am I wrong thinking that NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Oh boy now Columbian Soldiers can now go to Afghanistan and help out Oye oye

#10

Great slogan! Great pun!

#11

Let’s be clear about this individual. He represents the white, racist military industrial complex machine that is occupying most of the planet right now. But not for long as a Moral Revolution is sweeping through, starting with Mexico and we’ll soon see who’s next.

#12

Anti trump protests will continue in England and Scotland after he arrives from Brussels.

#13

The “either or” logic is very naive and unrealistic. Ending NATO alliance will only strengthen Putin’s stance in the world , nothing else. Wait for NATO demise and Baltic states will start seeing “little green men” defending “oppressed” ethnic Russians.

On the other hand poor will still be poor and climate will still deteriorate. Money will most definitely not going to rerouted to other programs. I see RT news everywhere, Putin propaganda at work.

#14

Those were breathtakingly erroneous assumptions, but I forgive you.

#15

This is not on topic, but I was thinking of Trump’s stupidity and lack of communication skills, and how that will play at the upcoming summit - and was reminded of this little part of his Nazi Hate Rally in Montana last week:

“I have broken more Elton John records, he seems to have a lot of records. And I, by the way, I don’t have a musical instrument. I don’t have a guitar or an organ. No organ. Elton has an organ. And lots of other people helping. No we’ve broken a lot of records. We’ve broken virtually every record. Because you know, look, I only need this space. They need much more room. For basketball, for hockey and all of the sports, they need a lot of room. We don’t need it. We have people in that space. So we break all of these records. Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.”

I have re-read this a dozen times. This man is absolutely freaking unhinged. How anyone can hear him say this and not think “wow…holy crap…” is beyond me. What is scary is how his tens of millions of raving, froth-mouthed rabid worshippers can hear him say it and think, “wisdom! utter brilliance! Oh, Most Enlightened One!”

Seriously. That single paragraph of Trump’s unscripted, rambling, incoherent, normal (for him) speech reveals what an utter fucking moronic fuck-noodle he is. And this loon will be going to NATO to represent and speak for the United States. :shudder:

#16

Those weren’t assumptions, just straight up questions.
I’m ambivalent about NATO myself and am interested and some viewpoints.

#17

NATO? An enforcement arm of global capitalist empire, by any other name, would still produce the same ripe stink. And particpation in it is still wrong, regardless of who opposes it.

#18

Once you cross the water it’s not everyone’s who’s enlightened. The mighty search engines are pretty mum re Euro heads of states’ views on arming Ukraine (I mean at present). Quiet as church mice. I know Corbyn was questioning it 4 yrs ago, and I’m thinking Germany even fewer back; but as of this past weekend we had this NATO worry over the Trump/Putin summit.

Things are starting to get depressing. It’s no wonder these protesters are gearing up.

from the link…

“…ensuring a stable investment climate for transnational corporations. In Colombia, this is a euphemism for the displacement of nearly five million people and the intimidation and massacring of union leaders, activists, and indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities by paramilitary and military units in order to carry out extractive activities, plant cash crops, and maintain the prevailing unequal power relations that have only deepened and been institutionalized by the recent free trade agreements.” https://www.counterpunch.org/2013/07/02/nato-sets-its-sights-on-colombia/
