BOSTON - The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ release last Thursday of a proposed state Pollinator Protection Plan has outraged beekeeping leaders across the state who say the state plan promotes the interests of pesticide companies while ignoring recommendations put forward by beekeeping industry experts who are trying to reverse a decline in pollinators needed
Industry lobbyists were at work and received the ear of legislators. It illustrates the imbalances of the lobbyist system in that the deep pockets of industry are not matched by the public or as in this case a diverse but small group of small business owners.
This scenario is where big money interests and corporations lobby for legislation favorable to themselves and somehow that is then promoted as being legal and fair because anyone can lobby etc.
It is about as fair as a multi-billion dollar pesticide industry lobbying against a small group of bee keepers.
