It’s all just a distraction from the horrors that the elitist scum of this country are inflicting on many in order to make a buck.

Hi PonyBoy:
I think it’s worse than that. I think they actually compare money to godliness----of course when Mr. Epstein 's life gives out more details—there might be some poetic justice happening in the political arena. In fact , that political arena might end up resembling the picked to be sacrificed and slaughtered ones inside of the Coliseum. : 0

How many news reports do we see on payday lending institutions ripping off the poor, lack of affordable housing for lower income folks, food deserts in inner cities, funding cuts to programs to provide health care for the needy, and on and on?

There’s always plenty of money for the elitist class, welfare for big business, humongous tax cuts/breaks.

In the richest country on earth we have a major portion of us, who are underpaid, unfed, sick and dying and unable to provide even the basics of living for themselves and their dependants.

It is said, the United States is the best place on Earth to live.

If that is true, the United States must be run and governed appropriately so everyone benefits and prospers.

As it is, it’s intentionally being run to benefit the few, not the many.

Yes - They - Do.
And they also equate having money with being ‘smarter’ , being correct about what ever the subject is.
It gives them an inflated view of themselves compared to people who accumulated less money.

Hi PonyBoy:
Yes that is all true, but with the right elected ones, it is possible to change the world in a very short time, like FDR did. The problem is where do we find another FDR before Trump/ Bolton/ Pompeo start WW3? But, I think that the SQUAD is making a good start!

After watching the anniversary of the moon landing—President Kennedy did say we’ll send a man to the moon and America did it in 8 or 9 years.
Maybe it was because lots of people were still being affected by their WW 2 experiences–and we keep hearing of them being called the Greatest Generation. Maybe it was because everyone in America seemed to share in the war effort ( unless a person was Japanese, German or Italian) Maybe that is the answer:too many choices and wouldn’t that be weird!
It seemed like when there were 3 TV stations more Americans got shared ideas. People created the jobs with FDR —so how did we end up making so many jobs a gig job, and making rents sky high?
Maybe WW 2 really was a bonding experience where people of many classes and races , and experiences could end up working together for a common goal–is it possible that too many choices disconnect people from each other? Maybe less really is more for the people of many nations.

Hi Phred_Pharkel:
This is so curious as it seemed for many years in American history, at least modern American history-----that many of the nation’s leaders were more intelligent than many of the ones we have now. Maybe it was because after WW 2, we were so much better off than the blown up cities of Europe. Because we weren’t bombed to smithereens
maybe that was the beginning of the downfall…Hubris strikes again? Maybe the “Last one standing,” situation was the beginning of America’s political and military hubris---- at least that’s the way we seem today. But then, I think America had a better educational system back then too. There has to be some reason that America became stronger and richer and more equal with better laws and better education—and then began to backslide.
Or maybe, it was Ronald Ray Gun and his Star Wars philosophy, and his busting up the Air Traffic Controllers union that began the Great Slide in mediocre jobs and pay and the sending of manufacturing jobs away. : (

Exactly. If you’re so smart why aren’t you rich?

What’s the problem here?
People pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, it’s what capitalism is all about, well that and sending most monetary gains to the top. Shouldn’t we go ahead and replace the stars and stripes, with the version that replaces the stars with corporate logos? Long over due.

Dear Alan McCloud…
I have been following your articles for a while now and I must say that you have a better understanding of corporate propaganda than at least 99% of Americans despite hailing from Scotland. It is imperative that we expose how the mechanisms of the Great Western narrative are reinforced by the enemies of the 99%. Your latest article is wonderful however I did have issue with one opening line…
“Out-of-touch corporate media give us…”
To imply that corporate media is “out of touch” implies that they’re ignorant to what the true stories are or that they don’t recognize how they’re supporting mainstream propaganda. I would have to respectfully disagree and say that corporate media is intentionally delivering its “porn” with complete knowledge that they’re contributing to the campaign of mass misinformation. I personally have known quite a few journalists who wrote stories showing wonderful deeds by the community to help disadvantaged people, but they followed up with the major short comings of the system that resulted in the disadvantaged having no where else to turn. However their editors quickly eliminated the parts that placed the blame on weak and ineffectual governments while leaving the rest of the story intact.
Journalists know why their stories ring hollow, but to keep their jobs, they have to accept the fact that their first priority is to reinforce the right wing ideology of their employer. Naturally any of these journalists could quit their jobs and work for an unbiased, independent publisher, but that usually entails a drastic cut in pay that many journalists can’t afford.
In any case, please keep up the good work. It is only when the public learns to critically analyze the BS that is delivered to them by the MSM, will they have a chance to break the chains of slavery form their corporate masters.

Thank you to this author for highlighting yet another failure of our (mostly hog-tied by corporate news owners) journalists/
media staff to recognize and call out this genre of heartache porn. I am old enough to vaguely remember, from my mom watching it, the daytime TV show, ‘Queen for a Day’. It had 3-4 women on each day, with stories like: Mom washing countless dirty clothes from her large family by hand, because they lacked funds for a washing machine. Or ones about a child’s medical costs bankrupting families, or someone disabled, lacking transportation to start a job. Horribly, the audience clapping was tied to a meter, and only one of the contestants would win some help with their needs. I think this was in the mid-to-late fifties… If we can all raise this point about other western nations’ citizens having so much more from their taxes and governments than we do, maybe the point can become common. Then, 2020 elections are coming.

"The right elected ones…"

I love your optimism Stardust. I only wish it was contagious within the masses.

There will need to be some special human being that can unite the “haters” with your standard “Zombie” that only sees D or R and supports one party, and one party only.

America had a better educational system back then

between WWII and the 80’s we had a better educational system than today. In the 80’s (Reagan, Reagan “democrats”, Democratic party sold to the Koch Bros, DLC) the Democratic party started morphing into the republican party and education, Unions etc went down the toilet.

after WW 2, we were so much better off than the blown up cities of Europe

We were almost the only manufacturer. SO we prospered. Then our manufacturing was moved, sold off, and the allowed to die by the same crowd, Republicans and the Reagan “democrat” Republican wanatbe, Democratic party.

I’m sure someone can point out where I’m wrong about this but that’s the way I see it.

I like your recommendation here. I’m thinking the flag would better reflect present day American reality if: We took the famous bull of Wall St. ( Merrill Lynch ) and positioned a stream of 50 Smiley Faces, dripping and spraying out onto the sidewalk, starting from under the twisted tail of this magnificent looking, but almost completely stupid, powerhouse of an animal.
Any other suggestions from CDers for a newer, and more modern, version of Old Glory?

Hi mrsannhitts:
I think that Trump will be designing a new flag—and it will reflect him, of course.
His flag will be all white—with nothing on it. : )

Now, is it that the corpress is “unable to see” the reality these stories so tragically illustrate

Or is it that they wish us not to see it?

I’m looking forward to the story about the country that was plagued by a government that was completely dysfunctional and was always transferring money almost directly from the treasury to war profiteers, terminal-illness profiteers and environmental destruction profiteers…

so a bunch of caring people got together and built the country a government that actually worked.

This is a Brilliant Astute Article that captures the Callous Indifference Americans have developed toward one another.

MacLeod has placed a mirror in everyone’s face to show us how Heartless we have become and exposes America for what it is:
Every-man For Themselves Aboard the Good Ship USA.

People like MLK who have tried to change our insensitive uncaring Society are Assassinated for attempting to make the world a more Egalitarian place to live.

Now we have a Candidate who is running for the Presidency, Bernie Sanders, who proposes Humanitarian Ideas that would Benefit ALL Americans, not just the handful of Rich, and he is ridiculed as a Crazy Old Man with Communist Socialist ideas.

Why is Bernie dismissed by the Wealthy Moguls controlling the Media?

Because it the same old refrain since time immemorial the HAVES are still trying to suppress the HAVE NOTS.

Why do you think people were willing to Kill in order to maintain Slavery, because Cheap Labor generates Profits for the Plantation owner and Corporations make more Profits by suppressing Wages.

Bernie is trying to change this equation but the HAVES are ridiculing his proposals and Lying about how Helpful Medicare For ALL would be, and put an end to kids selling Lemonade to help pay for their Mothers Health Care Treatments.

Symbols work best when they are fundamentally meaningless. That way they can be adapted to promote any ideology and easily confuse people about the principles of the people who were around when those symbols originated.

This is the case with linguistic symbols (words) as well, though the people in power might have to work hard to first strip them of their original meaning.

This is why the flag has come to mean, “war is awesome” and freedom has come to mean “let’s all go shopping online.”
