Men's Tweets To Women Sportscasters: "One of the Players Should Beat You to Death With Their Hockey Stick Like the Whore You Are"

Men's Tweets To Women Sportscasters: "One of the Players Should Beat You to Death With Their Hockey Stick Like the Whore You Are"

In an often hateful and misogynistic culture, there's likely not much worse than the mindless, profane, violent vitriol regularly spewed at women sportscasters by online bullies with issues they haven't addressed and keyboards they can hide behind. Having had enough, Chicago-based sports journalists Julie DiCaro and Sarah Spain launched #MoreThanMean, a stunningly pointed and pained PSA wherein visibly discomfited regular guys - not the Tweets' authors - read to them messages like, "I hope your boyfriend beats you," and then softly, ashamedly add, "Sorry."

#3

Some men make ugly tweets to male sports-casters, too. Probably the same guys. But is that an issue? No. It's when those men go after delicate female flowers that outrage must be shown. Next, calls for criminalizing hate speech. And immediately after? Calls to ban BDS as hate speech.

#5

This article is condescending towards men; and the relentless interpretation of political issues in the vein of identity politics is very dangerous. I suggest you consider my comment, and then look at what is going on at campuses all over the country. These pseudo-liberatory "feminist" fanatics are opening the door wide to the loss of academic freedom, free speech, and due process, which in their view does nothing but support the "patriarchy". It's a calamity.

#6

Even the feminist Daily Beast acknowledges men more than women are harassed online. This article promotes the dangerously nonsensical idea that we live in a misogynist nation, when in fact women lead men in 14 of 15 quality of life issues including longevity, health, healthcare spending, college attendance and graduation, discrimination in the criminal justice system, victimization by violent crime, suicide, and homelessness.

Please, stop this nonsense. It serves no one well.

#7

We don't. In fact I rarely hear this from men. I hear it almost exclusively from people claiming that they need money or censorship to fight an issue that appears not to actually exist in a meaningful way.

When the military glorifies macho violence...

When Hollywood glorifies the use of weapons...

When teen boys come of age addicted to video games that get them excited over slitting female avatars' throats and/or "enjoying" gang rapes...

When teenage girls who want to be popular end up drugged at parties and gang-raped, and these acts are videotaped and later published on the internet (or passed around, cell phone to cell phone) with NO punishment to the boys and profound humiliation to the girls...

When pornography is the #1 item "consumed" on the worldwide web and MUCH of it is based on degrading, devaluing, demeaning women...

Then all of these activities condition a lot of males to behave this way.

As was shown in the film (depicting a real life event) where Jodie Foster is raped by several men at a bar while others stand around and watch...

Often when males get together they act a lot like the British prep school kids from "Lord of the Flies."

The fact that when women like me speak up about these things, a great many males respond by insisting that women are just as violent as males, or they'll pull up an anecdote about a boss who was "a bitch" or some other nonsense... shows how COMPLICIT so many men (and some idiot women) are with Culturally Conditioned Misogyny.

It hardly helps that patriarchy grants males disproportionate power and influence over the lives of both genders; and that the vast majority of human beings are conditioned to view God as a guy.

Your bigotry is so complete as to be deranged.

You mention incidents notable, thank god, for their rarity and try to pass them off as commonplace.

"Then all of these activities condition a lot of males to behave this way."

--"A lot"?? What a terrible, imaginary world you live in. In the real world, our shared world, 99.86% of men were NOT arrested last year for a violent or sexual offense. Join us. The world is a far better than the horror you want to pass off as routine.

It's amazing how little insight and empathy men show for this.

Most women don't have to directly hear this filth because we live in an atmosphere suffused with it.

Women feel far less safe than men if they go out at night. There are LOTS of women abducted on the way to get gasoline, driving home at night, stopping for an item at a convenience store after 10 P.M., etc.

There are LOTS of male predators.

The savage feelings that some men feel towards women represents the most extreme aspect of misogyny but misogyny runs a full spectrum and most men harbor it. They think they are benign since they don't go out and rape...

It's not that different from the way a bunch of cops ALL attack the Black kid who's down for the count. A few might watch and not actually take part in the attack, but standing there is a form of complicity... especially when few cops will "turn on" their brothers. They close ranks and protect wrongdoing AND savagery. Much of it is also projected at women.

"This article is condescending towards men..."

Unbelievable. Make it about wounding men, jerk-off.

That's on a par with angry white guys decrying Affirmative Action; or Trump and others minimizing Black Lives Matter with patronizing generalities like "All lives matter."

Can you see past your own dick?

Your screen name never showed up till now.

Whenever CD publishes ANYTHING about violence to women, human FECES like you show up.

The individual who defends those on the RECEIVING END of major, damning, dangerous prejudice is not the one who is guilty of bigotry or deranged.

You fit the type of male that probably sends violent sexual comments to not just female sports-casters.

Blair... sure. And Oat bran is standing by to provide back up.

Looks like someone called for a baboon convention.

You guys can stand around masturbating without me. Imbeciles!

Young women -and men-are committing suicide or being deeply damaged by cyberbullying, and CD readers argue about free speech

A young firefighter in Virginia took her own life just recently after being hounded by male colleagues with insults and threats.

Except, we don't live in a "misogynistic culture," Abby. If we did, women would not be doing vastly better than men in nearly every relevant measure of well-being. Women live longer than men, yet we spend more on women's health care than we do on men's, even after accounting for reproductive and maternal health care.

Women on average live longer, are in better health, receive more health care spending, receive enormous favoritism for identical crimes from the criminal justice system, go to college more often, graduate more often, do better in secondary school, and account for far fewer of the homeless, far fewer suicides, far fewer workplace deaths, and on and on and on.

Even feminist Hanna Rosin, in her essential article "When Men Are Raped," acknowledges that outside of prison men are sexually assaulted and raped nearly as often women, and that women make up a significant majority of the perpetrators. Once your factor in prison, in the U.S. men even constitute a majority of rape victims.

In short, I don't know where this "misogynistic culture" you refer to exists, but if it exists in the U.S., then just imagine how godawful things must be for men, since by nearly every factual measure men are doing worse than women; often far worse. Even the Daily Beast, as I linked below, reminds us that men more often than women--in additional to being the primary victims of every violent crime we track--are victims of online abuse.

Please stop spreading this pernicious nonsense.

i need to go to my safe room for awhile now.

Hah!

Right on target. These people have gone completely off the rails. Can you imagine, teaching 19 year old girls that all sex is rape? This is liberation?

Sometimes, movements get taken over by those with psychiatric difficulties; and then, it's nothing but havoc.

#22

I like your post, reviewing what anyone who actually cares about humanity would know if they weren't blinded by their ideologically driven beliefs. So my advice would be not to ask "please". People who are drawn to these distortions are driven by their own psychiatric problems.

#23

Every serious study has shown that women batter men as much as the reverse. Serious violence, on the other hand, like stabbing or shooting, is carried out 4 times as much by women. Furthermore, when the battery is one-sided, the women do it twice as much. And, battery in lesbian relationships occurs at the same rate as that in heterosexual relationships.

We are living in more than one distortion field; and some of them envelop movements that claim to be forms of "liberation".

#24

This feminist tactic is the underpinning of the whole project. The concept of "rape culture" is that a bawdy joke or a clumsy advance or even making a woman uncomfortable by criticizing her feminist ideas is on a continuum with rape by knife-point in a back alley. So we have to police speech: start by making a woman uncomfortable, and then next thing you know you're on the road to becoming a Ted Bundy.

#25

Wow, Abby, you brought the misogynists out of the wood work with this one. We have a long way to go to being a civilized species is what I get from all this. Maybe a good quote would be "Patriotism and sports are the refuge of scoundrels".
Off subject a bit is the City where I live, Regina Canada where we have two football stadiums, the newest costing 3/4 of a billion dollars in a city of 300,000 people. The team flags show up way to often on the graves of dead fans at the cemetery. Can you imagine your life being remembered because you were a football fan. Is there really any hope for the human race?

#27

you make no sense, but what would one expect from someone that believes in nothing

#28

Both men and women are disposable in a global capitalist culture that commodifies everything. We're all headed for the industrial slag heap, along with the rest of the planet. Women are being abused and raped? So are men, children, forests, oceans, coral reefs, the sky, rivers, grasslands, wetlands, aquifers, lakes, wildlife, plant life, the genome, insect life, you name it.

We in the civilized world are exactly what the indigenous in Amazonia call us: the termite people.
