Mikhail Gorbachev Appeals for Sanity, Dialogue

Mikhail Gorbachev Appeals for Sanity, Dialogue

John Scales Avery

OSLO - President Mikhail Gorbachev, former leader of the Soviet Union and recipient of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, has appealed to world leaders to reduce the dangerous tensions, which today threaten to plunge human civilization and the biosphere into an all-destroying nuclear war.

He wants sanity, and dialog with the US. Doesn't he realize these are mutually exclusive?

I don't think there can be more tragic historical figure than Gorbachev. His capitulation led to this mess in the first place. By removing the one leash capital had, he personally enabled the global ransacking that's been taking place.

That said, he's a decent man. Better than most leaders. And it's a shame that he's become such a rodeo clown for the West. I'd like to see him come clean and apologize for surrendering socialism to capital prematurely. And then disappearing altogether from public life.

What an irony , the leader who unsuccessfully tried to steer Russia towards western culture is appealing to west. Perhaps he should turn around and appeal to the Russian authoritarian leader.

I think if you will read Gorbachev's Perestroika (1987) and On My Country And The World (2000), you may come to different conclusion as to what his hopes and intentions truly were. He stands among few peers in the name of peace, particularly since the advent of nuclear weapons. The latter work, in particular, well describes his hopes for a socialized and peaceful world. I urge you and all to read it.

I just recently finished reading Gorbachev's latest book, titled in English "The New Russia".

Far from disappearing from public life, Gorbachev has never ceased trying to make things better since the collapse of the Soviet Union, which he didn't want.

What is most disturbing to me is the inevitability of what is happening to our world, and not even a Gorbachev or a JFK were able to turn the tide, so to speak.

Apparently, we need to bring world population down to a sustainable five billion or so (Lester Brown), direct air capture CO2 until we reduce levels to 350 ppmv - approximately, and set aside half the world as a nature preserve to maintain 80% of biological diversity, according to Edward O. Wilson.

And while we struggle with these seemingly impossible tasks, we need to not nuke ourselves into an early grave.

I'd recommend we all read "The New Russia", E.O. Wilson's "Half-Earth", and perhaps "The Apache Wars", newly out, by Paul Andrew Hutton, to see first hand, again, how not to act.

Not one treaty with the Native Americans, in the history of the United States, not broken - not one.

Can you really do this and not lose your soul - your humanity?

And without your humanity - what is left?

A much needed call for sanity from Gorbachev. We need to hear more of these statements far and wide.
The US refused to sign the UN nuclear disarmament agreement, sad for this country. Obama said he was going to push for it but of course now there's no comment from him.
Clinton, they say, will back down in the face of a nuclear war or a war with Russia. But who knows since she's making all this noise about that old enemy, Russia. She's blamed them for the email leaks, Ukraine and now Syria so it's not looking good.

Apparently we've come all this way only to discover we are not evolved enough as a species to not self destruct. After a hundred years the white man is still taking Native American land and way of life. We've not come far. Though all these things offend your spirit some don't seem to feel anything like that, they are the weakest link in humanity.

Yes, in light of the unleashing of US hubris I really miss the USSR.

I have the highest regard for Gorbachev and always have. He seems to be one of the rare few who see the greatest threats to the planet.

She knows better since she was directly involved along with neocon Victoria Nuland in the overthrow of Kiev's elected leader Porshenko. She's is fully aware that all that is currently being reported about Russian aggression via the MSM is a lie because she is the architect of much of it.

How many foreign military bases does the US have? About 30 according to wikipedia.
How many foreign military bases does the UK have? About 15 according to wikipedia.
How many foreign military bases does France have? About 10 according to wikipedia.
How many foreign military bases does Turkey have? About 4 according to wikipedia.
How many foreign military bases does India have? About 6 according to wikipedia.

How many foreign military bases does Russia have? About 10 according to wikipedia.

Russia is surrounded and the total number of bases is 65 to 10. And now we are provoking them. Do you know what hubris means? Do you have children?

"Do you have children?" TowerofBabel

"We all breathe the same air. We all love our children. And we are all mortal." President John F. Kennedy, at American University, commencement address, June 10, 1963.

Would that we had Kennedy and Gorbachev today.

As WikLeaks has revealed, it was only when the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in 2009 rejected an oil pipeline, running through his country from Qatar to Europe, that he was attacked.

From that moment, the CIA planned to destroy the government of Syria with jihadist fanatics – the same fanatics currently holding the people of Mosul and eastern Aleppo hostage. (Source)

The Clintons are liars, thieves, and cons. Her private policy is that she's a globalist who wants open borders, which in turn, will weaken national sovereignty and allow mainly banksters and billionaires to eventually establish one global government, ruled by oligarchs who worship predatory capitalism. In case you don't know what this means, it's the neo-con wet dream of the new world order, and Hillary embraces it.

Anybody who doesn't read and analyze the Podesta emails, and then connect the dots, doesn't know what they're talking about re Russia, a convenient scapegoat. It's only a matter of time before that corrupt Foundation is revealed for the devilish money laundering scheme it's always been.

Forget Wikipedia. The U.S. actually has at least 800 military bases on foreign soil. The Pentagon puts it at 865; Others say over 1000.

The following link is to a very timely speech, given Oct. 25, 2016, to the House of Lords, by a respected British expert on Russia. Dr. Papadopoulos explains why Russia has very good reason to react to current actions by the U.S. and NATO.

Since the video's audio track is not that good, it's easiest to read the text of the speech, as you listen to the speech.

‘Action vs. reaction,’ Russia responding to threats from the West, says Dr. Marcus Papadopoulos (VIDEO)

He didn't have any choice. What broke the eastern block was the removal of meritocracy and its replacement with incompetence, mismanagement, and cronyism. This is toxic in any environment, as we can see in the US now. The US and capitalism will fall and for the exact same reasons as all the empires before it.

Take any nation or ideology, throw a smart meritocracy at it and it will soar, change it to incompetent cronyism, and it will fall. Empires 101

I'm voting no evil, (Jill Stein of the Green Party).

I dont quite understand the media's limitations on introducing Stein. I dont quite understand Stein's inability to grab some publicity while the top two are suffering so many setbacks.

The system is stacked against a third party candidate. The elite only want to elect somebody from the one party, War Party (Republicans and Democrats). The best we can do now. Is to build up the Green Party by the millions. To act has a counterbalance to wide spread corruption in the two party/ one party War party. Separate we are only drops of rain, together we become a mighty roaring river.
