'Naked Attack on the Free Press': Trump Allies Reportedly Raising $2 Million for Campaign to Discredit Journalists

And many crimes of the last three occupants of the WH.

Anyone who has studied the history of US journalism knows this has been true for most, if not all, of the time the nation has existed. Example — think William Randolph Hearst.

Merkley is one of my senators too. If I gave credit for lip service, I’d think he was one of the most progressive senators we have. He still might be; the bar is so low. However, Trump is the easiest target in the world for Democrats. There is no risk to Merkley for going after this low hanging fruit. Sure, Trump is terrible and should be called out. But if you are a senator who only pops up to make a show out of disapproving of dictators, and you ignore the biggest threat to press freedom ever, then you are a toadie for the 1%.

What would happen if the press just stopped covering that Orange Thing? Starved the sad slob of his oh so obvious oxygen?

Covering as in reporting on what they are doing is essential. Giving them the podium to spew their nonsense enables.

Do the former, stop the latter.

Yes, freedom of the press is only for the press you agree with, right?

So you support attacks by the government on journalism they disagree with?

Once they have imprisoned the staff of the Washington Post, what do you think is going to happen to the staff of, say, Commondreams, or Democracy Now?

True, not even ‘independent’ media will report about this:

Good article.

“Seventeen out of the 18 charges that Julian faces in America refer to the routine work of an investigative journalist, which is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution…. The whole thing is a sham. The US prosecutors know it’s a sham, the British government know it’s a sham, the Australian government know it’s a sham."

What we are experiencing in the US at this point in time where fascist ideology is relentlessly implemented is what the Nazis termed “Gleichschaltung”, the consolidation of institutional powers which includes the M$M. Toe the party line or we’ll do away with you , one way or another…

But don’t worry! The Dem leadership will get right on it! Right after they finish their hearings on hush money to porn stars. smdh…

The consolidated corporate media is already there- including (and perhaps especially) the outlets cited, which have become nothing more than the voice of the oligarchs.

Which for all of the wrong reasons- and in an upside down topsy turvy sort of way, makes this campaign and other like it an excellent and long overdue idea.

*Actually, we did have a similaR thing in the early 00’s. It was called Media Whores Online.Their morro was some to the effect of “the organisation that sought to bring corporate media to its knees, but found that it was already there.”

Best thing about these folks: they weren’t at all shy about naming names and were meticulous in their research and fact checking.

You are so right!

That is the heavy irony in this pot-calling-the-kettle-black incident.

Many players in the MSM surely deserve strong criticism for their professional moral cowardice and incessant mendacity, but Trump has no credibility to do it.

Ultimate snowflake.

This is not a Trump problem, it is another of the many GOP problems that continue to plague us,

I completely agree with you.

So, rump is trying to discredit journalist all the while journalists are really the only way we even know what he says and does. I guess rump doesn’t want us to believe a word he has to say. Fine by me. “rump! Your a liar and can’t be trusted!” Do you feel better now?

Also related to Wikileaks, they just posted this tweet a few hours ago. Jeremy Hammond may be in a similar situation to Chelsea Manning now. He has been forced out of a prison program that would have taken two years off his sentence, in order to be coerced into a grand jury, which may effectively add two years to his sentence whether he complies with the grand jury or not.

Merkley is progressive on some issues, but not others. For instance, a few months back, during the time of Gaido’s attempt to name himself ‘president’ of Venezuela, I received 2 or 3 emails from Merkley calling Nicholas Maduro a ‘dictator’ who needs to go, an incompetent leader, etc. He didn’t mind the crippling sanctions, he just didn’t want US troops sent into Venezuela to get the job of overthrowing Maduro done. He got an ear-full back from me each time he sent out that crap.
He is also a supporter of whatever Israel does, it seems.
For these reasons, I’m not his biggest fan.

ad revenues would plunge. Trump’s flock loves watching him, but the Dems need him almost as much. They need Trump news like a junkie needs a fix.
