NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Statement on SCOTUS Ruling Striking Down Clinic Shutdown Law

TEXAS - On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a historic ruling striking down provisions of a Texas law that would have forced all but 9 abortion clinics in the state to close. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Texas clinics in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt.

Heather Busby, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, made the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a victory for Texans’ health and safety"

This bill addresses nothing but health medical safety.

Let's focus on areas where both sides of the debate agree:

  1. Clinic abortion is an invasive surgical procedure, performed exclusively by specializing physicians.
  2. Extremely common dangers and complications of abortion, including pelvic infection, incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, cut or torn cervix, perforation of the uterus wall, and anesthesia-related complications, are better avoided or treated with up-to-date clinics and/or timely and priority access to hospital facilities.

This bill is solely about protecting women from medical hazards associated with abortion and nothing more. By its actions, the Supreme Court has endangered women's lives.
