Nation’s Largest Utility Duke Energy Doubles Down on Dirty Fossil Fuels With Purchase of Piedmont Natural Gas

CHARLOTTE - This morning Duke Energy, the largest electric utility in the country, announced its intention to purchase Piedmont Natural Gas for $4.9 billion in cash. The two companies are already partners in an effort to build the $5 billion, 550-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline to transport natural gas from the Utica and Marcellus shale basins in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania to Eastern North Carolina.

Customers might want alternative energy and renewables. The politicians know that they do but the politicians don't have to listen to polls and opinion surveys. The only thing that politicians can't really ignore is the tens of thousands of people marching in protest that is seen on the evening news.

Politicians can talk over anything but they can't talk over what everyone can see. The time for mass demonstrations about climate change is upon us. Nothing else will produce change fast enough to avert the worst case scenario climate change.
