Netanyahu Still Swaying US Congress

Netanyahu Still Swaying US Congress

Stephen Zunes

Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of Congress on March 3 was unprecedented in many ways.

  • It constituted a major breach of protocol, in that it was the first time the Speaker of the House has extended such an invitation without consulting the Administration or the opposition party.

It was an interesting article till the last sentence: “What is disturbing is that so many in Congress still believe him.”

The cheers and standing ovations have nothing to do with “believing in him” and everything to do with campaign contributions. Without that the place would have been empty.

A more interesting article would be one that explores the changed effectiveness of the Israeli Lobby after this debacle.

Nancy Pelosi commented that Netanyahu’s remarks were an “insult to the intelligence of the United States as part of the P5 +1 nations”. Did she remain seated when the “'yahu” was getting standing ovations for the drivel he was presenting to the Commedia dell’Arte troupe of Congress Critters? Does anyone know? I didn’t see her name on the absentee list. Did anyone watch this pathetic spectacle?
