States will be on the hook for funding contact tracing after federal funds for contact tracing end tomorrow. Further confirmation that DC is not interested in controlling virus spread.

Excellent summary of befuddlement from Naurekas. But the headline is slightly inaccurate: even Jim admits the guidelines make just a teensy bit of sense:

And you’ve got some empty hospital beds, which is good, because if you rely on criteria like these to tell you that you’re ready to reopen, you’re likely to put a lot more people in the hospital.

My heart goes out to poor Dr Birx, whose job it is to step in front of a microphone and explain how much sense these guidelines make. Scientific purgatory. What did she do, in a previous life, to deserve this?

I think that Jim used the word good with ironic sarcasm. Spreading the disease is neither good nor okay simply because hospital beds are available. That’s like saying that prevention is unnecessary because “treatment” is available - no responsible physician would say that.

I put treatment in quotes because treatment is mostly limited to support while the disease runs its course, for better or worse. See: ~https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/clinical-guidance-management-patients.html

The Administration was embarrassed in the early weeks of the pandemic by news reports of hospital hallways filled with patients on gurneys. Extra hospital beds means mostly that the embarrassing optics can be avoided because the patients will be in rooms and not on video. Available hospital beds is a White House criterion for “re-opening” society for electoral reasons, not for medical ones. In any case, the spare beds will be filled within three weeks of a premature opening.

Jim is right, the White House criteria are nonsensical. It is dangerous fraud. Protect yourself folks. The fools in the White House now, are so stupid, incompetent or just plain mean that they are going to get a lot of people killed.

The White House erroneously ORed two criteria that the CDC ANDed

Downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14-day period

OR(should have been AND)

Downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests within a 14-day period (flat or increasing volume of tests)

The feds stopped caring about containment when they realized that the black community was overwhelmingly being hit by the virus.

It’s in both corporate parties’ perceived self interest to deny aid to everyone and make the situation as bad as possible. Republicans want as many sick as possible out of hatred (and the Postal Service privatized and mail ballots abandoned) so only fanatical right wingers vote in November (or whenever, if ever, the election is held), heedless of their own safety out of denial of the existence or seriousness of the disease. (As they’ve denied various levels of climate truth.) Democrats want the economy wrecked so Trump and the Republicans get blamed for it.

But the Republicans seem to be holding their own on the spin so the Democrats may collaborate in wrecking the economy and then not win either White House or Senate anyway. And of course there are other reasons for both halves of the corporate duopoly to burn the country down: particular local political battles; disaster capitalism galore; etc… See several comments at ~https://grist.org/climate/one-state-just-banned-reusable-shopping-bags-due-to-covid-19/#comment-4850978957

It’s one thing to realize the theoretical advantage each half of the corporate duopoly would get out of disaster. It’s another to see both parties actually follow the strategy (while lying about it to conceal their criminal psychopathy, of course). We’re being monstrously betrayed by our rulers.

It’s about time there was an uprising across the country. It needs to be coordinated better, and have more advanced goals than just protesting. We have to aim at blockading and removing the traitorous psychopaths of both parties from power and replacing them with progressive leaders who will act on climate, inequality and encroaching fascism.
