NFL Players Demand Sweeping Prison Reform, Denying Trump's Request for List of Potential Pardons

Julia Conley, staff writer

In a New York Times op-ed, several current and former NFL players rejected President Donald Trump's request for a list of people they would like to see him pardon, demanding instead that he enact far-reaching reforms to end the crisis of mass incarceration, which has seen black Americans sent to prison at more than five times the rate of white Americans.

“President Trump, please note: Our being professional athletes has nothing to do with our commitment to fighting injustice,” the players wrote. “We are citizens who embrace the values of empathy, integrity, and justice, and we will fight for what we believe is right. We weren’t elected to do this. We do it because we love this country, our communities, and the people in them. This is our America, our right.”

Horray these guys are taking advantage of the moment to take a stand against the unjust incarceration of people, a law given to us by Clinton. Can you imagine being jailed for life for stealing a $150 piece of clothing ? Incarcerated for life ! Another form of enslavement. Note to our youth: This is a great example of how to take the high road, steeped in the dignity of ordinary citizenship rather than the trappings of fame and $ucce$$.

So far Mr. Trump has mainly pardoned embezzlers, people who lied to the FBI and witness tamperers.

In reaching out to football players, Mr Trump is saying, “You’re all millionaires and so you should have a small say in who gets pardoned. Just give me one or two names.”

End the War on Drugs to end Mass Incarceration.

NFL players : Press on!
Dumb Donald is tone deaf, racially blind he only sees white, and dumb as a rock. Don’t count on him for any positive change. He is only a manipulator and sociopath. Fuck him.

I would like to suggest adding Johann Hari’s book, “Chasing the Scream,” to your list because it offers alternatives to mass incarceration for drug “crimes.”

Probably the only meaningful request would be to do the United States a favor and resign. Trump has removed himself so far from being an acceptable president that it has reached the point of absurdity. Even Republicans politicians are being to recognize that Trump doesn’t have a genuine political following but a cult-like following. For the first time in the history of the US it appears the president is a cult leader.

The NFL. Players should just tell trump to fuck off period, he deserves no respect period. The asshole can’t even sing the national anthem and he is telling players and others who have served in the military what is and isn’t patriotic, Tillerson was right he is a fucking moron, with apologies to morons,I’m sure some are nice people.

According to the corrupt Supreme Court----a court that has thrown out the Bill of Rights—a court that says having money equals the right to have a voice in this country----these players should have a voice—try and put some ads on TV showing the inequality in this country and see how far you get???We live in a corporate military police state-------don’t piss off the plantation owners.

No one deserves an asbestos insulated coal lined cell for life more than Trump and anyone who supports him enough to share the space with him as he is guarded by dark skinned Muslims or Latinos who might actually treat him with more decency than he deserves.

Any one of these men would make a better president and leader than the Donald.

This is a system of White Male Supremacy being peddled by the Donald.

They are not about to change our prison system – it is basically they who have created it.

They will follow him anywhere as long as he continues to support tax cuts for the rich, privatization of the peoples real estate, institutions, buildings, medicare, medicaid, SS and rid the poor of food stamps, housing, and a living wage. These people want a serfdom.

I commend the players for writing the letter, and NYT for publishing it. Not likely it will change anything, but it does refine the protest movement.

illusion –

Supreme Court has given Elites/wealthy the right to MONOPOLIZE their political voice
over the voice of the people.

Trump basically leads a “White male supremacist” cult –
