No Two Sides About It, Confederate Statues Must Come Down

Yohuru Williams

One of the enduring images of the 2000s was that of American Marines purportedly helping a group of Iraqi civilians tumble the statue of Saddam Hussein at Firdos Square in Baghdad in April 2003.

There is no debate over this. These monuments along with confederate battle flags are an insult to many, many americans. We cannot permit these type of slights to continue if we are to mature as a nation. I’m sure many of the confederate soldiers were brave and courageous but their cause was odious and malignant just like that of the Nazis. These monuments seem to be a painful wound that never healed brought to us by the “jim crow” south. It is time to nail the coffin on the thoughts that there was some kind of virtue or honor in the confederacy. It was and will always be a malicious cause.
