Memo to POTUS:
Norway can afford such a comprehensive package of social benefits mostly because its citizens aren’t burdened with paying for seven wars (that we know of), more than 700 overseas military bases, and tax subsidies to wealthy individuals and corporations who would be doing just fine without them.
Norway has a “Much Bigger” GDP than you do, and they’re not afraid to use it, and the means to get there that brings prosperity to all of their people.
“Most” European countries are better off for workers and the general population than the “shithole” US. Probably 80% of the people in this country really believe that the US is “number one” in ALL categories. Two that come to mind right away is economic inequality and prison population. Oh, I think we are way up there in infant mortality also. If I was younger and have the meager savings I have now, minus health probs, I would leave here in a Haitian heartbeat.
I’m Norwegian in spirit, stuck in this ________.
When I lived in Africa, we had better labor law than the US. The US really is a shithole.
Agreed. Probably too late for me at this stage of my life, but I would have moved in a New York minute to one of those “evil socialist” countries loooong ago if I had had the means.
Fun Project: go around your work/school/neighborhood/etc. sometime and ask a dozen or so people to define socialism. At least 90% of them will get it wrong, with at least 80% of them conflating it with “communism.”
Fun Fact: The above results are in large part due to the horrible - and expensive - education system in the US, which currently ranks around 50th in the world.
When Bernie was running, both the Democrats and Republicans never missed a chance to tell the public that he was not a Democrat, but one of those “Socialists”.
Oh darn, and all these years I thought we were number 1 in education. USA, USA, USA!!! I was arguing online with a rabid right wing/Christian type and he insisted that the Nazi’s in WWII were Socialist!! Because the party name in English is the Nationalist Socialist party. Fucking idiots!!
"The United States was the least equal and the least healthy nation among the world’s richest states under Bill Clinton, under Barack Obama, and under George W. Bush.
Trump can’t turn the United States into the biggest “shithole” among the world’s rich nations. It was already there."
Youse guys are right on, pye yumpin’ yimminy!! Maybe that’s because Norway’s government – like Denmark’s, England’s, Ireland’s, Austria’s, Iceland’s, Germany’s, Sweden’s et al – is run by its human people instead of an oligarchy of Multi-NaZional korporate “people”.
While it is true that a GOOD education in the U.S. can be expensive, public schools through the 12th grade – because most of them ARE so horrible – are an expensive waste to taxpayers but not costly to their students (except in the sense that a poor education is a lifelong burden). Even most Junior Colleges are not too bad from a tuition standpoint, although they’ve become much more costly than they used to be.
If we simply cut the military to the size actually needed for “Defense” (funny, how we have that as the name for the Department, but we spend so much time on Offense…) we’d have enough funds to do most everything else.
…and massively more democratic than the 'States.

“If you earn a decent living, and don’t have to worry about the cost or health care, education, or retirement, you’re more free to pursue the rest of your life than if you don’t know if you’re one sickness away from bankruptcy or may have to live out your old age in poverty.”
Made my day, as I also imagined FDR smiling in acknowledgement.
Ever since his time of dedication (with spirit) to providing paths for the common good, for all, for the downtrodden to whatever level necessary (if/when needed), there has been a growing cabal willing to cross any line of ethics, morals, or soulless humanity, in order to utterly destroy everything accomplished through those steps of (evolved) progress. Their Social Darwinistic/Ayn Randian hearts were always both cloaked and clear. But now, after decades of collusion, the time has come – to celebrate, openly, since those paths so despised will soon be left as dust in history books. And later, they will implement finishing touches, as those very books are revised.
Anything wrong with it? Nothing.

Them durn socialist. They don’t know what thir’ amissin’ we gets ta’ go ta’ mergency room fer’ free when we get sick, but that ain’t socialiism, nope. We also get food stamps, but gettin’ food stamps ain’t socialist neither, no siree, that what my boss at Walmart told me anyways, when he suggested I go apply fer’ em’. Did I mention I got me a big ol’ diesel truck that rolls coal? Yep, shore do, an’ I got a whole yard full of junk cars that shore do look purdy. Oh, and we kin’ own as many AK 47’s with bump stocks as we want, they’re really good fer’ deer huntin’. Welp, better go take down my Conferderate flag don’t like ta’ leave it out in the rain ya’ know.
Please site the research backing up your assessment of “most” USA public schools as “horrible.” Having taught in a number of them in WA and CA, my experience conflicts with your opinion. "The US ranks 17th(our of 40 countries) in educational performance."https//rankingamerica.wordpress.com. For you public schools are “an expensive waste to taxpayers”. “Waste”? Having American kids educated is a “waste”? Interestingly,In USNews.com June 24, 2015 article by Allie Bidwell “Report: Federal Education Funding Plummeting”…“Over the last five years, Congress has cut federal funding for K-12 education by nearly 20%, about five times more than overall spending cuts…” And, then there is this fact “In 2015 military expenditures accounted for about 54% of our discretionary spending…in contrast, education accounted for only 6% of the budget.” Your attitude appears common these days. During my youth, education was viewed as an essential civic commitment to the future of the country as a whole and paying for it was considered a worthy and necessary investment.
Scully is an Irish name so if you have a parent or grandparent who is Irish you can legally claim Irish citizenship and an Irish passport pretty simply, and as Ireland is in the EU you will automatically have a right to reside any any EU country of your chosing (including Norway even though it isn’t in the EU) and receive free healthcare and any benefits that may be due to you because of your ill health…
I am both a product of, and later a teacher in, California’s public schools. Back in the mid-fifties, when teachers could still live moderately well on their salaries and still had at least a modicum of respect in their communities, I was privileged to have some very good ones – at least one in each major subject area of English, math, science and foreign language. After working as a chemist for a couple of years, I went back to school and earned a high school teaching credential in math & science and later added psychology and computer science. I left my job teaching mostly chemistry and some general science & math in he L.A. City Schools when, in spite of my vehement protests that I had NEVER taken even one semester of Biology – not even in high school – the chairwoman of our science department, with the concurrence of the school’s principal, decided that since I was such a good chemistry teacher it would be easy for me to give up one period of chemistry and teach biology instead. A similar experience when running the computer lab at a junior college convinced me that the above is a good example of how much school administrators care about the quality of the education they’re dishing out. Subsequent experiences at different schools in yet another district simply confirmed that public education has become mostly baby-sitting, carried out primarily – although certainly not exclusively – by the below-average products of those same public schools — the ones who lack the education and/or skills necessary to obtain better jobs. There are undoubtedly a great many highly intelligent, very dedicated & hard-working teachers in our public schools, but they are greatly handicapped by lack of funding and outnumbered by mediocrities both beside and above them who are there just to get by.
I stand by my statement that our public schools have deteriorated to the point that most of the money spent on them – AS THEY ARE PRESENTLY CONSTITUTED – is wasted. I did not mean to imply that having our kids educated is a waste – far from it – only that the majority of our public schools have been (deliberately?) allowed to decline to the point that they are, in many areas, a joke.
Norwegians are actually getting a bargain! Americans surely pay more when you add up the money paid for health care, education, child care, Social Security taxes, Income Taxes (Federal and State) and private retirement plans. Less stress. More leisure. Better life!
You got it, Pony. The key words: “all of their people”. We have been carefully conditioned to not ever think in those terms! If we could just overcome that unfortunate habit, we could do so much, together!
