Obama to Receive $400k for Speech to Wall Street 'Fat Cats'

Nika Knight, staff writer

Former President Barack Obama is garnering criticism for netting a whopping $400,000 for his first major speech since leaving office—a speech to Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald, scheduled to take place in September.

“Almost as if,” “it seems as though”? Really, he’s not accountable to us any more. He’s a man forced into retirement before he’s 60. Let him alone.

And anyway, I thought this week, to students, was his first major speech. Or do we define “major” only as those we can pick at?

How is this article “news” when me and several other CD posters have reminded readers for 8 years that Obama would be getting paid the equivalent of his annual POTUS salary for each corporate speech he would be giving post POTUS ?

Does he get to specify the type of private jet that takes him to and from the speech venue the way the Clintons do ?

Any of you readers who are still surprised that Trump won, please raise your hand.

Obama had me at his, “We’re going to take on the Insurance companies” speech while running for POTOS in 2008.

Boy, was I suckered.

At least I learned from that great deception.

Evolve to autonomous democracy.

Somehow just because Obama was a Democrat …people expected him to not act like a Republican!

That said, at least he was intelligent and possessed an admirable urbanity.

Now we have Trump … in contrast!

#9

Didn’t Reagan receive some $2 million for doing a speakng tour in Japan after leaving office? And that was almost 30 years ago…
$400K is nothing.

#10

He had me when he promised to pass EFCA. I was attacked on websites such as this one for trying to point out that he was breaking most,if not all of his campaign promises.

#11

I agree. In addition, Forbes put out a good article noting the hundreds of thousands of dollars the Obamas have donated to charity, on top of the Nobel prize money that was all given to charity. While they are wealthy, they’re not by any means soaked in millions like the Clintons.

All the 1% or 5% are in for the take as they know it is all gonna crash again. Get it now and protected it. If banks can pay all these fat cats $200,000 - 400,000 for an hour speech and donated upwards of that to politicians, something is really wrong with this system.

But then he worked in their interests for 8 years with a few crumbs thrown to we the pubic.

#13

At least we got to see his tax returns. And why is anyone surprised as this has been what happens with former presidents.

We once had a president who had a different relationship with the wealthy special interests that exercised so much power over the rest of us. Here is what he had to say in 1936:

"We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace–business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.

They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me–and I welcome their hatred."

No $400K speeches for that fella. Of course, that’s when the Democratic Party was the party of the working and middle classes. Times change.

Really, I hope no one was under the illusion that President Obama was an unequivocal supporter of the working class! His half stepping, half measures, watered down, his as gruel, wishy washy Affordable Care Act, too small economic stimulus and that fact that no financial capitalist went to jail is overwhelming evidence of whose in interest he was acting. Geez! This speech money is just one installment in the payback.

#16

Obama is being rewarded for presiding over the greatest transfer of wealth to the 1% in history.
Presidents are nothing but tools of the elite to concentrate wealth and power.

#17

It just goes to show what cheapskates those Wall Street types are. For all Obama did for them the payoff should have been much, much larger.

Completely different time, different America. And FDR was aristocrat through and through, from a family personally untouched by the Depression. Nemmind that he died in office, before the end of the war that built the original military-industrial complex.

#19

I believe that was George H. W. Bush.

#20

I can’t believe anyone is surprised here. I feel like Inspector Renault in Casablanca:

“I’m shocked, shocked to find gambling going on here”

“Your winnings sir…”

Obama’s just collecting his winnings from the crooked casino he presided over

It was also the Party of segregation and Jim Crow.

  1. Get to be a high, or highest, government official. 2. Leave office. 3. Write a crappy, ghostwritten book and get paid millions. 4. Sign on to the rubber chicken circuit and give the same boilerplate speech whether you are talking to a University , a big bank, or the beef growers association. 5. Sit back and let the money, and the accolades for giving up your career in private areas to selflessly go into public service, roll in. . That is how it is done now.

I don’t remember Nixon, Ford, Carter doing this. Reagan may have started it with his speeches in Japan. Clinton made it into an art form. How can this not corrupt?
