Ocasio-Cortez Demands Democrats Use 'Every Procedural Tool Available' to Stop Trump From Filling RBG Vacancy

Okay, Senator Markey couldn’t possibly be more clear (even though Nancy was playing coy for incomprehensible reasons):

“Mitch McConnell set the precedent,” Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) said Saturday. “No Supreme Court vacancies filled in an election year. If he violates it, when Democrats control the Senate in the next Congress we must abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court.”

That’s the part of this which matters: Registering that immediate threat (and promise) loud and clear. Procedurally, Senate Democrats cannot possibly stop the appointment (whatever the comedian Sirota thinks), so I’m skeptical of the pattern right now: putting a whole lot of energy into a guaranteed failure (as usual, for Dims). Seems like more learned helplessness to me.

The point is we actually are the actual people in phrases like “we the people” – so we are the ones who get to decide on how the rules should work. If the rules don’t suit us, there’s no reason at all why “we the people” cannot make that little democratic repair, as needed.

Great thanks for AOC and her principled fighting spirit; so long absent in the DNC neoliberal complicit, corporate-dominated DP establishment!.

With Chucky “Milquetoast” Schumer and Nancy “off the table” Pelosi as “leaders” calling the shots the likelihood of any real gumption or fight is wishful thinking - chances slim to none; the “my good friend” rubbish and a quick roll-over by the complicit DP rulers, regardless the demands of the rank and file Independent voters or future of the nation is their MO. That ability for those two and the other Quislings to dictate how we will fight and use the same tactics Republicons use the issue, and if they do not fight to the damn max, they must be voted out and replaced by people with some Grit and determination! Enough of the pattern of folding before the fight is even joined - perhaps expecting R’Cons to act in an honorable or honest manner? That is BS wishful thinking - they should know by now McConnell is scum that has no honor or integrity, only extremist hyper-partisanship!

It must be remembered that weak and complicit “strategy” and smarmy incompetent scheming by the DNC/DP establishment is what brought us here; betrayal of the 99% to serve campaign-contribution bribery and rightward shift; losing mid-term election after mid-term, losing the support of millions and nominating “centrist” and frankly corporate/war whores rather than the principles people demand.
We need many other AOC’s and far-fewer idiot “strategists”, Chucks, and Nancys!

Bless Ms Cortez for holding Chucks feet to the flames, but in reality the Supreme Court of the US has been run by conservatives pretty much the entire history of our nation. That institution, as well as the senate, were both put in place by the founding fathers as a compromise (cave in) to the southern states in order to keep them in the union as the articles of confederacy were being composed.
The few have ruled over the many since the founding of this republic. The SCOTUS has maintained that status quo for its entirety. We don’t need to change the court or add or subtract seats. We need to burn it to the ground, along with the senate. If we are to have a democracy, those institutions cannot exist.

Odd view, given the remarkably precise historical justification for expanding the Supreme Court at this moment. With opposition to change like this, you’re in the same camp as the reactionaries, effectively. There’s no reason further change could not follow expanding the court, after all. No, let’s not change anything until we burn it all down! Brilliant strategy there? An unfunny joke? You tell me.

What if the Trump administration puts forth their nominee, but doesn’t hold a vote on it before the election? If they leave it hanging, and especially if they claim they can’t be sure it will get to a vote before the new congress and president are sworn in, or if they try to get a vote but it doesn’t pass, they give a huge incentive to their base to get out and vote.
If, instead, they hold the vote and get their nominee in, then they lose the reason for those folks to vote. At least some of the so-called pro-lifers may actually not like The craven Donald and would feel they could finally stop supporting him since they got what they wanted. For some ending abortion is what they are all about. For others, it’s just a way to get and keep power. Just a thought.

The SCOTUS needs not exist, period. Jefferson worried about it becoming a tool of the wealthy class (as well as the senate) and pretty much just permitting America’s original wealthy to establish their own feudal system in the new nation, only this one would feature them as the lords and ladies of the manor. The SCOTUS is an institution of (currently) 9 unelected monarchs. The way to fix it is not to add more monarchs. The way to fix it is to destroy it, as it should never have existed in the first place in a supposedly free nation.
My point is simple, we are either a democracy, or we aren’t. If we are, the SCOTUS cannot be permitted to exist. If we aren’t, and the SCOTUS is permitted to exercise absolute power over the other branches of government, what is the point of having a House of Representatives? All we need under that system would be a President (king) and a council of Lords, the SCOTUS, as they can simply nullify any and all legislation that leaves the House.
The system is already broken. It needs torn down and replaced with something better. A SCOTUS cannot be part of that new foundation.

You speak as if adding more seats could not possibly advance, and would most probably obstruct, the further changes you advocate. It makes absolutely no sense. Also: It’s reactionary.

Democrats increase number of SCOTUS judges to 15 in 2021 - in 2025 republicans carry Senate and increase it to 50, 2029 it goes to 100; 2033 it goes to 500. Anyone see an unworkable trend here?

You misunderstand. Adding more seats only fixes it, today. What happens if we do add 6 seats, making it 15. If a Republican Senate gets elected in 2024, whats to stop then from adding 3 more seats, or 5, or 10? Where does it stop?
And you still seem to want to ignore my argument. The SCOTUS is our most non-Democratic institution. It lends itself to corruption and the influence of the wealthy status quo. It cannot be allowed to exist in a nation that calls itself a democracy.
Look at it this way, Democracy, as Churchill told us, is messy. It can indeed be two wolves and sheep deciding what to have for dinner. However, with the system we have right now, there are two wolves being ordered by the sheep to eat vegetables.

AOC, you safeguard RBG’s legacy as only you can in YOUR district. Stay strong. You are a beacon, as was she. You have mighty big shoes to fill. Walk tall, and watch your back.

I agree with @Senior_Citizen_71
do not attempt to pack the supreme court.
If schumer cannot stall the vote for new justice, then we have the wrong senate dem leader.
Maybe that is the cause for the panic solution.

time for Democratic leadership to show the American people that they are not the hapless, spineless, patsies for the Republican destruction of our democracy they appear to be-if they are unable to hold the line with the multiple tools they have–it will be proof positive of their uselessness–my fear in that in this, as with many issues, the Democrats will bring a fistful of wet noodles to the gun fight with the Republicans—not taking any bets on the Democrats --who have been failing at this task for several decades now

since the problem is the life time nature of these appointments–your scenario is a false flag-a judge appointed today will have their seat for years -if not decades-if we were interested in reform we should be looking to Congress -who has the power to REGULATE the court and can --if they chose to to so–prohibit the court to rule -as in legislating from the bench-on their interpretation of the Constitution over bills passed

Don’t forget that it was Joe Biden who championed Clarence Thomas as Biden destroyed Anita Hill.

And it was Clarence Thomas who made it possible for Bush to be appointed president when Gore won.

If Biden gets the chance to nominate a Supreme Court Justice, he will have to be watched like a hawk as Biden will most likely choose a candidate who will further advance the power of the Corporations.
And the Democratic Party will go along with with his Fascist choice as long as Roe v Wade is protected.

Ever Vigilance.

As AOC says, Democrats in the Senate need to take a page from the Republican playbook and block, obfuscate and slow down by any means necessary, any appointment to the Supreme Court while our Supreme Leader is still in power

The Centrist Conservative Dems don’t have it in them for real getdowninthedirt fight to stop McConnell. He will ultimately win the day with a new judge if he “loses” the first pick but will win the second go. He’s o fool and believes he holds a winning hand or he would not be pressing forward with a pick and win now. Dems can threaten all the want, but it’s all puff and bluff. They haven’t been able to block any nominees McConnell has put forth and seated, and they can’t now. The DP has long outlived any useful purpose of us voters and citizens. None of them care about AOC, her posse, other progressives as they are a minority and have no power–Ask Pelosi, She made that clear on national television.

The Democratic Party leadership will do what they always do, publicly whine and then cave. They may even fast track the appointment, as they’ve done repeatedly for Trump.

But as most leftists understand the Democrats are, for the most part, all talk and no action.

Yes, and what Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Democrats will not do is to call for the American people to take to the streets in protest.
