Oceans Protected Us from Worst Effects of Climate Change, But They Can't Take Anymore: Report

Nika Knight, staff writer

The effect of climate change on the world's oceans has been understudied, a recent report from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) finds, and it is far worse than many scientists and politicians had previously thought.

"We all know the oceans sustain this planet," said Inger Andersen, IUCN's director general, to National Geographic, "yet we are making the oceans sick."

I'll read this report.

But who is the "we" referred to in the article posted here?

How many voting citizens know how much CO2 and heat the oceans have been absorbing?

About as many who will be voting for Jill Stein I would imagine - i.e., not enough.

The "Tragedy of the Commons" is ignorance - pure and simple.

But the cause of this profound disconnect from the natural world is not pure and simple - unless perhaps we blame 'civilization' itself.

For the few who are trying to stay in touch, I just read a brilliant exposition on the 'father of environmentalism', and this book has my highest recommendation:

"The Invention of Nature - Alexander von Humboldt's New World",

by Andrea Wulf.

How could I have not known more about this man - inspiration for Charles Darwin, John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, Louis Agassiz, and a host of others???

But it's never too late.

Just another indication that the human race has gone insane!

War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.

Sadly this warning is nothing new, it has been told and re-told and not heeded for many decades - tragically this latest warning of the fast approaching (or already arrived) "tipping-point" will also be ignored by those who control life on Mother Earth and direct our future. The game is money, and profits above all else, regardless the consequences. We exploit, slaughter, pollute, and kill every living thing including our Mother and ourselves!

The people/politicians and mechanisms (vulture capitalism) in control of life on Earth are fools and corrupt criminal minds, devoid of any and all common decency or concern for the Common Good........it is therefore up to the conscious few to educate others and fight by all means to protect what surely will be destroyed if we do not prevail.......

"We are the most dangerous species of life on the planet, and every other species, even the earth itself, has cause to fear our power to exterminate. But we are also the only species which, when it chooses to do so, will go to great effort to save what it might destroy" -- Wallace Stegner

"Face it oceans, you f**ked up, you trusted us."

Reason 1,278 to vote for Hillary Clinton. That is the only way to cancel out those climate denier votes (and white supremacist votes) for Donald Trump. Pretty simple but it really matters.

#9

Reason 1,278 to NOT vote for Hillary Clinton. She works for the people who profit from ongoing destruction of the ecology.

#10

According to another writer here this morning, this article is just more "catastrophism" which distracts us to focus on the immediate demands of the ecology, instead of focusing on "overcoming political divisions."

"Sanders said that Clinton supported and continues "to support fracking."

As secretary of state, Clinton supported and promoted fracking around the world. As a 2016 candidate, her support comes with conditions such as local choice, stronger environmental regulation and chemicals.

Sanders’ claim is accurate but needs additional information. We rate it Mostly True."

Why are our citizens so ignorant of the facts?
Don't our children attend school from the age of 6 to 18?
Do our schools employ teachers?

#15

Look, we all know HRC has been selected and will be installed as President. You can just take the money they pay you and shut up. We've all figured it out. Ok?

#16

Thanks to the Clintonites Lrx is living right at the poverty line and needs every penny they pay him for his support.

#18

Hopefully you'll bring 100 friends to the polls with you.

According to BP and US agencies that had "oversight" of the 2010 Gulf oil well blow-out, the oceans are doing just fine and especially after adding a "little" Corexit oil dispersant to the water.

#21

"...surface temperatures worldwide would have risen by 36° Celsius since the 1970s..."

Does the author mean 3.6 C?

#22

And what will be your conspiracy theory when Trump gets elected?

#23

Yes, and Trump will be far more amenable to responding to any future clamor to ban or restrict fracking, right?

#24

How about the bright side. Reincarnations to another, this time, untouched blue-green planet, and no dick-heads allowed.

#25

What impact do you think Clinton's wars and expansion of the military will have?
