Poor Dixie. Heads are exploding across the South as change, arduous but inexorable, makes its way across a God-fearing landscape even less able to graciously accept it than the rest of us. Faced with stunning images like this from the current battle over gay marriage in Alabama, southern states are responding with ever more desperate and defiant legislative moves aimed at stopping time. Among their crackpot schemes: Declaring their states Christian, English, prayerful, straight, Bible-based and in no need of "tyrannical" health care, thanks.
Some may recall that Moses asked God for guidance for his people. God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Some may recall that Jesus asked God for guidance for his people, and God gave them (and us, if we are Christian enough) the First Commandment: Thou shalt love the lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy mind, and all thy soul. And the Second Commandment: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Where in this tradition does God say to his people: pray for manipulation and control of thy neighbors?
There is a radical difference between asking God for guidance, and asking God to be your lobbyist on behalf of your homophobia, sexism, and/or bigotry.
