News that investigative journalist Robert Parry—who broke some of the key Iran/Contra stories as a reporter for the Associated Press and Newsweek in the 1980's—died over the weekend has been met with an outpouring of sadness among readers and a wave of reflections from fellow journalists who remembered him as an uncompromising seeker of facts who remained committed to his craft until the very end.
Robert Parry, one of the very best journalists and the fact that he was kicked out of the AP and the mainstream, corporate media for reporting the truth they did not want to hear and had to start his own blog tells me he will be missed.
I’m still having trouble processing this one. Thanks, John Queally, for a solid, moving tribute to a man whose importance will no doubt grow in the eyes of all as we come to miss his voice of reason, intelligence, and journalistic honesty in the madness that surely lies ahead.
This, from Caity Johnstone, maverick aussie blogger and journalist:
“If our species is to survive, it will be because of people like [Robert Parry]. The only reason we are in the mess we now find ourselves is because most people are able to dissociate from the terrible things that are happening in our world, and if humanity is going to make it past the hurdles it faces in the near future it will be because this stopped happening. We’re going to have to start feeling the fact that bombs are being dropped on people on the other side of the planet every single day because a few oligarchs want to keep potential geopolitical rivals destabilized. We’re going to have to start feeling the fact that the corporate media is being used to manipulate the west into consenting to systems which exploit ordinary people to bring ever more power to the already powerful. We’re going to have to start feeling the fact that an unelected plutocracy controls the most powerful government in the world which is naturally incentivized to maintain economic injustice in a system where money equals political power.”
A tremendous loss for all mankind! RIP Mr.
Robert Parry; thank you for your work and dedication to helping others. My thoughts are with the family.
What a loss for the world. Robert Perry was a honorable man. Few can say they have mastered their professions as well as Mr. Parry did his. RIP.
A terrible loss for all of us. Parry was one of the best investigative truth-tellers we’ve been lucky to have.
