Our 70th Anniversary Homework: Confronting the Myths and Learning the Lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Joseph Gerson

Seventy years ago, two nuclear weapons targeted against cities which met the criteria of having “densely packed workers’ homes,” killed more than 200,000 people in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the years that have followed, many more have suffered and died from cancers, radiation disease, genetic damage and other fallout from the atom bombings.

If only our humanity could keep up with our technology we might stand a chance as a species. We overpopulate, knowing it's a problem. We burn fossil fuels at irresponsible rates having eschewed conservation measures long proposed, knowing it's a problem. We create nuclear weapons and waste, knowing they're problems. We comply with oppressive political and economic structures, knowing that they're problems. Happy Friday to all!

Again with the WE pronoun that attributes equal access, intent, opportunity, and power to all... as if the great amorphous mass of humanity is behind the technology that limits choice. It is precisely this use of the collective we that works as a deliberate and calculated means for HIDING the culpability of those who DESIGN the systems.

In many ways, the human experience mirrors a chessboard. You focus on the pawns but they seldom direct the great game.

People, for the most part, adapt to the societies in which they find themselves. If they don't, they get steamrolled over.

And since people must accrue capital in order to survive, and jobs tend to come from those who HAVE capital... people will live where there is work, or where they can afford to live.

Other technologies that might have promoted FAR more efficient use of fossil fuels OR alternatives to it, were blocked by the $, power, and influence of Big Energy. As can PLAINLY be seen by the way that the Troika inhibits what the people in Greece can actually do; and also seen in the ways that U.S. citizens' wishes are being thwarted by corporately-devised policy decisions made in absolute secrecy (TPP, TIPP)... people are largely forced to deal with what is imposed on them through the financial system, existing technologies, and the legal system... which these days protects trespassers and punishes those who dissent, blow whistles, expose lies, etc.

A massive set of armed guards works to enforce the program. (Look at how it's used on the Black Community.)

There are always posters who RELENTLESSLY focus on this frame. They have no OTHER jobs apart from being here, and they largely sound alike and repeat the same messaging. One name that shows up often disappears and another screen name "miraculously" replaces it to parrot the SAME talking points. Someone is financing this and doing so to control debate and manufacture consent FOR the status quo.

This "we are all guilty sinners" crap plays well (as Frank Luntz, no doubt, figured out) since it works from the Bible's oft' repeated control text: Original sin.

Propaganda Quotes

Propaganda Quotes (showing 1-16 of 16)
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”

Just as an example of how propaganda works and how the mainstream media plays its role here, I came across a very interesting video the other day.

After the lafayette shootings one of the media giants interviewed 4 different "witnesses" for their impressions and what they felt. watch this. It appears at least three of the four involved with social media. The 4th "random person interviewed" was not so easily found.

So what are the odds that of 4 people randomly interviewed after witnessing a shooting at least 3 of them and possibly 4 would work for Social media and or PR firms?

The atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was done before most of us we even born nevertheless; that mass murder of so many innocent Japanese men, women and children and the perdition of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has to be the most heinous. egregious and revolting crime of the last century. And the fact that the American public were told it shortened the second world war is just more of the same propaganda to justify and rationalize this canard and to exculpate American exceptionalism.

The MSM and the sycophant press have gone along with this insouciant as acolytes, for far too long.

May I politely say Bollocks!

As we race against time to save our civilizations from the impending ravages of climate change, why are our governments preparing to inflict nuclear annihilation?

... because technology has catapulted us away from our caveman and primitive origins into a situation in which WE ALL - albeit to differing degrees - have our minds twisted into all the trappings and machinations of technology.

Those technological trappings, in my humble opinion, include language, highly abstract cognitive thought (notably including concepts like ownership, property, rights, fairness, justice etc.), monetary systems and EVERYTHING (far too much to list) that separate humans from every other species on this planet. As a result, WE have effectively created for ourselves an alien world from the one WE evolved for.

WE have driven ourselves mad in the process. And madness begets madness, until such times as it is recognised for what it is, and a determined effort is made to move in a different direction. For the most part, the human race is not there yet... as WE can see.

None of US is blameless because WE are not really to blame at all inasmuch as WE are not gods. The universe is just doing its thing. Those who blame (invariably others) waste time pointing fingers. Have you ever succeeded in convincing one person that they were to blame and that you were not? Has anyone? So what will blame ever achieve? Nada. Or even more animosity. Messages have consequences. People write blunt replies! (Some are well-meaning behind the bluntness).

True, the way in which the universe manifests itself is very different for each one of us. Adolf Hitler was not Mother Teresa. Maybe our madness is relative, as well as being highly varied. Who cares? End the madness... starting at home.

Similarly, USA used chemicals in SE Asia which also produced genetic damage passed on to descendents.

These weapons are even worse, in terms of longevity of damage, than the WMDs initially outlawed by various treaties.

After WW2, USA and allies did not drop their WW2 policy of attacking civilian populations as primary targets. Post-war studies showed these bombings were of minimal military effectiveness, but did increase the will to resist and prolongs war. Since WW2, the fraction of civilian casualties has gone up, even though weapon accuracy was greatly improved.

"You focus on the pawns but they seldom direct the great game".

In a great many chess games the aim is to have the last pawn become a Queen who then kills the King. However, I agree that the pawns are simply dumb pieces which do not think to protest as to how they are moved by the powers that control them. I suppose the last pawn which gets promoted to power enjoys the brief moment of glory before the game ends. After all, what elsehas a pawn got as a future?

The policy of using aircraft of some form to carry out terror bombing against civilians began with the German Zeppelin raids against London in the 1914-1918 World War and has been a war-fighting strategy held by many and, among others, the Japanese, ever since then.

During WW1 German battleships had been used to fire large shells indiscriminately at coastal towns on the British east coast. Little difference really; firing one-ton shells at civilians from 20miles away is little different from bombing from 20 000 feet. Though using drones and guided missiles adds a new layer of cowardice to the proposition.

Back in Ghengis Khan's days, Ghengis and his friends carried out a massive terror campaign against civilians across Russia and eastern Europe as far west as Poland, killing tens of millions.

Civilians have always been hostage to war-mongers and psychopaths in all parts of the world.

About time we did away with war, basically.

Might wanna hit the books there aligator. DU weapons and armor do not contain nuclear fuel. That stuff is radioactive as hell. DU is what is left after the highly fissile U253 has been removed from the ore.

#16

You realize that depleted uranium is less radioactive than the naturally occurring uranium that it started out as?? As Lamonte pointed out, the U253 is extracted the eaving the less radioactive DU.

#18

The point is, DU is not used in ammunition and armor because it is radioactive, it has very low levels of radioactivity and is not a "nuclear" weapon. It is used because its material properties make it a very good material for those applications. If it were that dangerous, why would you use it as armor and place it around your soldiers?

#19

At least we're on the same page now that is not used fuel rods that "the nuclear industry" wanted to get rid of...
