Our Planet Is Angry

Oceans: losing oxygen, warming, acidifying, plankton population has been decreasing for decades, coral reefs decimated.
Re the Australian coral reef: “It’s more than an alarm bell, it’s an air raid siren.” John “Charlie” Veron, the Godfather of Coral

Geoffrey West, physicist at the Santa Fe Institute, from his book Scale: "metabolic rates scale exponentially with temperature rather than a power law as it does with mass. Because metabolic rate—the rate at which energy is supplied to cells—is the fundamental driver of all biological rates and times, all of the central features of life from gestation to mortality are exponentially sensitive to temperature.”

“… a modest 2° C change in ambient temperature leads to a 20 to 30 percent change in growth and mortality rates. This is huge and therein lies our problem.”

What is the cause of our demise, i.e., what is climate change a symptom of? I submit that, largely, it is this emergent phenom: exponentially accelerating complexity, which includes exponentially accruing knowledge. Briefly: Add ~ 6 billion people since 1900, give billions access to exponentially more powerful tech. These inputs continue to expand human reach across the globe, creating myriad unprecedented relationships in-and-across Geo Eco Bio Cultural & Tech networks.

And what is world culture’s dominant app for relationship interface that generates our unprecedented relationships with the sky, ocean, other species, ground water, forests and human relationships? It is humans deploying monetary code.

The app lacks information processing reach, speed, accuracy power, and often slows or prevents creativity. These information processing criteria are the fundamentals of passing multilevel selection tests.

Add this information processing fundamental: Code is physics generated and physics efficacious relationship infrastructure in bio, cultural & tech networks: genetic, epigenetic, language, math, moral, religious, legal, monetary, etiquette, software.
“The story of human intelligence starts with a universe that is capable of encoding information.” Ray Kurzweil – How To Create A Mind

One manner of distillation:
Humans aren’t sufficiently coded — biologically, culturally or technologically — to pass natural selection tests in environs undergoing exponentially accelerating complexity for X number of years.
Year X approaches.

It has been posited by Dr. Guy McPherson and others that we have less than 9 years left. The 6th extinction will have done it’s work. The planet will be rid of the human infestation and most if not all life, to begin again anew. That is the real revolution taking place, it is not in our hands but Mothers hands. To think we can have a positive effect and turn the tide is delusional at best. Be kind, be generous and be honest.

I missed the identity politics–what are you talking about?

It’s a literary device, but the scientific reality is that in many ways, humans are steadily eroding the ability of the earth to support human life as we know it.

Like everything, there’s good and bad. China has polluted vast areas of it’s country destroying the health of untold numbers.

Our country has moved in the opposite direction.

It won’t be lack of resources that erode human existence. Rather it will be misguided allocation.

And then cell phones came along and everyone went to sleep. Revolution over.

Killing rulers can be done. It just does not work tactically because it births another ruling class.

“Our planet is angry”

“The earth is trying to tell us something…”

“A warmer planet cares little…”

“…the earth’s angry response…”

“The earth is doing its best to purge us…”

Most of the substance of the article is accurate, and its concern warranted, but i don’t think antrhopomorphizing physical/chemical/biological phenomena is particularly helpful. It obfuscates the processes at work and the needed solutions.

Nope, we need to remove them from office and change the system that allows corporate wh*res to hold office and gives corporations the essentially unchecked power they have.

Unless your instructor was Barry Commoner, they got these from him. And there were four:

  1. Everything Is Connected To Everything Else. There is one ecosphere for all living organisms and what affects one, affects all. Humans and other species are connected/dependent on other species. With this in mind it becomes hard to practice anything other than compassion and harmlessness.

  2. Everything Must Go Somewhere. There is no “waste” in nature, and there is no “away” to which things can be thrown. Everything, such as wood smoke, nuclear waste, carbon emissions, etc., must go somewhere.

  3. Nature Knows Best. Humankind has fashioned technology to improve upon nature, but such change in a natural system is, says Commoner, “likely to be detrimental to that system.” The Creation, one can argue, has an intelligence, and to tinker with that “unintellectually” we get global warming pollution, etc.

  4. There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. Exploitation of nature will inevitably involve the conversion of resources from useful to useless forms. In nature, both sides of the equation must balance, for every gain there is a cost, and all debts are eventually paid.
