Interesting outlook from Iowa in “Eating Tomorrow” by Timothy Wise of Tuft’s University, not far from Thoreau’s Walden Pond.

“For many Iowans, the immediate problem is their polluted drinking water, and to deal with it they have created the world’s largest nitrate removal plant to protect Des Moines’s drinking water from the nitrates, E. coli, and potassium-laden sediment that flows downstream.” p.119

These flows go all the way down the Mississippi and finally create a dead zone the size of Connecticut.

Meanwhile, back north in Des Moines, the citizens there are paying to subsidize corporate factory farms selling cheap pork to China and destroying small farmers in Mexico with cheap dumped corn. Displaced and bankrupt, Mexican small farmers then migrate north to try and support their families by working as illegal aliens.

Global climate collapse completes the karmic cycle with tornadoes and draught in Iowa. Now we ask our children to clean up adult messes?
