Paul Ryan Wants to Shut Down the Government, Permanently

Paul Ryan Wants to Shut Down the Government, Permanently

Dean Baker

Everyone has seen the news stories about how Representative Paul Ryan, the leading candidate to be the next Speaker of the House, is a budget wonk. That should make everyone feel good, since we would all like to think a person in this position understands the ins and outs of the federal budget. But instead of telling us about how much Ryan knows about the budget (an issue on which reporters actually don't have insight), how about telling us what Ryan says about the budget?

  1. Share everything.
  2. Play fair.
  3. Don't hit people.
  4. Put thngs back where you found them.
  6. Don't take things that aren't yours.
  7. Say you're SORRY when you HURT somebody.
  8. Wash your hands before you eat.
  9. Flush.
  10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  11. Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
  12. Take a nap every afternoon.
  13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
  14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Stryrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
  15. Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
  16. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first workd you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.”

--Robert Fulghum's "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten"

The wonk was too busy reading Ayn Rand during Kindergarten.

In addition to clarifying loony tunes Ryan for us, as usual Dean does a good job of calling out incredibly lazy & irresponsible "journalism." His "Beat the Press" blog is well worth reading. Thanks !!

Ryan-Clinton axis:

Ryan's vision would bring us the world's greatest dystopia, with low taxes For this stunted mind,, that would be achievement. I think he read too much of Ayn Rand.

It speaks volumes about contemporary political culture that Paul Ryan is regarded by some commentators as an intellectual heavyweight. In truth, Ryan knows nothing. He read Ayn Rand and was taken in her by noxious, vicious pronouncements against "collectivism," which, for Rand, is anything that smacks of liberal humanitarianism, social democracy or (gasp!) socialism. Rand was a pure dogmatist, not at all an original thinker. She is beloved by the Hard Right because she gave a pseudo-intellectual character to their most reactionary convictions. Paul Ryan cannot be a serious thinker if he treats Rand as a moral and social authority. Her books are execrable and anyone with half a mind sees that immediately.

Ryan is a despicable figure. He's actually a right-wing hit man, a vicious reactionary who is all about destroying the vestiges of the New Deal and the welfare state. But because he has good manners and a vague "boyish charm" (ugh!), people view him as a good man with high principles. The idea of Ryan the Randian in any major government position is appalling, but it's just what you would expect in these dark, demented times.

Conservatives say government doesn't work. Then they get elected and prove it.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.
John Kenneth Galbraith

A horrible right wing scum filth who is salivating and having orgasms over the prospect of destroying Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment insurance or any social program that helps the 99%. Paul Krugman has also accurately taken the measure of this con man and Atlas Shrugged fan. Of course, Ayn Rand signed up for Social Security and Medicare in her old age. Gee, what a moocher.

We have never had a democracy, though Whites were somewhat closer in the past. Then the psychopaths began to have success in their enslavement scheme. First they allowed unions, then they limited gun ownership (why would we proles need guns? we have unions now), next they shifted the tax burden off themselves onto us, then they limited unions, closed the asylums to put dangerous people out in the streets, as a response to mass killings by the psychotics roaming the streets got the media to beat the drum for limiting gun ownership, once enough useful idiots were on board they limited gun ownership further, limited union organising further, et continuing cetera. It's not hard to follow the causal chain, or see their final goal. "See approach yon Ryan's power: chains and slavery!" [paraphrased ]

Anybody else notice how Ryan is starting to look like Smeagol???

Paul Ryan believes if you're not wealthy you are lazy or stupid. If he and his ilk have their way, you won't need money; you will receive credits to buy at the company store. Ryan has it all backwards. We need to eliminate the military and tax the shit out of the elite; in other words, float all boats.

He was too busy looking for his 'precious'! :smirk:

I read an article about Ryan quite some time ago that said his father died when he was still in HS so he went to college on his survivor Social Security benefits -- what is it with these psychopaths like Rand and Ryan that want to destroy the very program that they benefited from?

Back in the 20th century the permanently stunted and damaged adults that you listed were called sociopaths.

Although US media owners directed their minions to create brand Ryan the budget wonk, CBO analysis has confirmed that Ryan's proposed budgets would increase the government's deficit and debt, despite Ryan's claims to the contrary.

Are we all supposed to know who this "Smeagol" is?

Wiseowl - that post is totally off topic and thus rude and inappropriate.

At this point, a "the worse, the better", may be the only strategy left. So bring this glazed-eye fanatic of "free markets" and let the USAn people have a taste of what Capitalism looks like in its terminal stage....

Although corporations (and the media and politicians they own) keep the myths alive about cutting domestic government to allegedly save money, recall Ronny Raygun, patron saint of self styled small government deficit hawks, expanded the US government to the point that there were the most government employees per capita since the US became independent in 1776, and the federal debt increased more than than it had under all of Ronny's 39 predecessors COMBINED.

Agreed that although some domestic programs like the ACA are huge corporate welfare programs. every dollar removed from "domestic programs" is diverted to other corporate welfare programs, with military industrial complex corporate welfare being the largest category thereof.

Seeing how every 2016 GOP candidate wants to defund Planned Parenthood (PP) despite PP's track record of preventing many of the abortions that those same candidates say they are also against, there is nothing unusual about a GOP partisan wanting to destroy SSI even though it kept him and his family from having to live under a bridge.

If you are not a hypocrite you will be banished from the GOP.
