People Power Just Dealt a Major Blow to Mayor 1%

Andrea Germanos, staff writer

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, dubbed Mayor 1 Percent, was forced into a runoff Tuesday after failing to achieve more than 50 percent of the vote in his bid for re-election.

Runoff elections, are almost universal in more democratic parts of the world, but are rare in the USA, so maybe reporters (including Amy Goodman this morning) don't know what questions they should ask. But the big question is, of course, which of the other first-round candidates are going to endorse Mr. Garcia for mayor, which are going to endorse Emmanuel, and which neither? The outcome is largely going to hinge on this.

Thank you Yunzer, I agree with you.

The article doesn't say, but I assume we are talking about a Democratic primary. In communities that are either heavily Democrat or heavily Republican, primaries are the only chance at a meaningful vote. I hope in this case the people of Chicago will take advantage of this opportunity.

The People are taking a stand against the systematic Privatization of Public Services and Assets. The unquestioning bipartisan support for Deregulation, Outsourcing and Privatization ushered in by the Reagan Revolution is coming to an end.

Whether it is our schools, parks, libraries, hospitals, universities, parking systems or any other public property, we will fight it and the corporate sponsored elected officials like Rahm Emanuel who support it.

Privatization is the willful Deconstruction of Civil Government, and the Looting of The Commons.

groan

Another hyperbolic headline on CD. "Major blow"? So Emanuel has to dip into his huge corporate-funded war chest and spend of few more bucks for a runoff.

There's optimism and then there's delusion.

Chicago elections are nonpartisan. Watch the Democracy Now segment referenced in the article. The runoff election will determine Chicago's fate. All Power to The People!

Short sweet and to-the-point-definition of privatization--nicely said.

It would be useful to know how many of the other candidates who spit the vote between Emanuel and Garcia will solidly back Garcia as Yunzer has noted.
My guess is that the Emanuel camp is burning up the phone and email lines shopping deals around for backing--probably Garcia's people are doing the same. Nice to see an otherwise arrogant politician humbled for at least a little bit though.

This news gives hope that the 'worm is turning" and the plutocrats will be sent packing...regardless of party affiliation. Rahm is a democrat in "title" only as his actions belie his campaign rhetoric...a veritable conservabot repug in democrat's clothing. May the other candidates line up behind Garcia to oust RE who will certainly land on his feet as a highly paid lobbyist in DC.

#12

Oh, that's right - how could I forget that? The AFL-CIO has got to go. We need a whole new labor movement.

#14

You are right in saying the article didn't say, but it is only in a general election that a candidate has to face a run-off for failure to get over 50%.

#15

The delusion is that the election would be free of ballot-counting fraud. Likely, the fixers miscalculated how many votes to divert to Rahm. The fixers are those who create the ballot-counting software.

In the runoff between the two, they will not make that mistake again, so Rahm will win, no matter that the people will not have actually voted for him.

#16

This is a huge step in the right direction for the people of Chicago. Good luck and fight on.

#17

We can only hope that the good people of Chicago can rid themselves of the succubus that is Obama's dark side.

Emmanuel is NO democrat.
He is a dual citizens which has been responsible for helping to
elect Pro War candidates for support of Israel.
Emmanuel has also attacked the democrat's base while in charge
of Obama's policies.
And why did Obama have Emmanuel there and was Emmanuel also
carrying out Obama'w wishes.

October 24, 2006
(DCCC), Congressman Rahm Emanuel, had worked hard to guarantee that Democratic candidates in key toss-up House races were pro-war. In this he was largely successful, because of the money he commands and the celebrity politicians who reliably respond to his call, ensuring that 20 of the 22 Democratic candidates in these districts are pro-war. So the fix is in for the coming elections.

Emanuel pushes Progressives aside for corporate & republicans health care policies..

Look what happen when we have a real democrat in charge of the
DNC..
We won the House, the Senate, and the White House under Dean's chairmanship.
After Dean was fired , the republicans took Dean's policy of building
their party on a 50 state basic and of course a good bit of criminal
corruption to boot.

Go Garcia!! Let the rest of America learn and follow their lead. I borrow the phrase: Power to the People!
