The Obama administration is reportedly looking to Silicon Valley for assistance in the war on terror, as a handful of top government officials on Friday head to San Jose, California for a private summit with leaders of Apple, Microsoft, Dropbox, and other tech giants.
I heard FBI Director James Comey talk about meeting with the tech companies when he was testifying before a congressional committee. The solution to this problem seemed to be more hope than any concrete ideas. Comey noted that the tech companies wanted encryption to protect privacy but the thing that keeps him up at night is encryption. I think they are hoping for some technological solution but whether they can ever find it remains to be seen. How to have both security and privacy in this digital world is perplexing.
