Plans for Huge Roaming Protests as Campaigners Plan to Make All of UK "No-Go Area" for Trump

Andrea Germanos, staff writer

Resolved "to make the whole country a no-go area" for Donald Trump, the Stop the War Coalition on Wednesday announced a line-up of events across Britain to shore up opposition in the lead-up to the U.S. president's visit to the U.K. this summer.

Why isn’t the US-left coordinated and organized - both in the streets and in party politics - the way the UK-left is?

Every other issue or question we on the left might argue about is subordinate to addressing this question.

#3

And if you plan to watch the protests on US media, remember not to blink.

#4

One of the problems the left suffers from is their intolerance for new ideas. So when someone or some idea is proposed, rather than question it or debate it, they just “demonstrate” or shout down those with whom they disagree.

#5

I admit this leftist likes old ideas—for example, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

That would be a new idea for alt-right knuckle-draggers, though. You should try it.

“One of the problems the left suffers from is their intolerance for new ideas.”
please cite an example to support your assertion that the left is intolerant to new ideas.
imv, the right are more rigid in their ways and resistant to change. if it wasn’t for the left, we’d be stuck in the fifties with racial segregation, drug prohibition, homophobia and the nuclear arms race.

#7

Dissent has not been criminalized in the UK, unlike the US.

#8

That is, as we used to say, a cop-out.

The US still has as about as much freedom of dissent as any other western democracy, and it certainly has more freedom of dissent than it did in the early 20th century when the US left and organized labor were, nonetheless, making their greatest advances.

BS.
Ask Code Pink.
And I guess now that Standing Rock is out of the headlines, you have completely forgotten that.
There is a real chilling effect when protestors are threatened with 40 years in prison for standing up to the government in the United States or trying to protect their land.
And don’t look to the Supreme Court (a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries) to protect the First Amendment. We all know what our presidents think of the Constitution.
And don’t forget about the “dissenting” baby that was killed by US funded snipers in Palestine.

#10

Or ask Ray McGovern, or Black Lives Matter, or…

#11

So the British are going to protest our batshit crazy oligarch, all the while constantly voting for handmaidens to their own oligarchy that run their nation into the ground and have turned it into the economic laughing stock of the western world, and at the same time continuing to celebrate their sorry assed royal family.
Ah, the pathetic British people. There is no low they won’t sink to in a feeble attempt to supplant US as the head of the worlds hegemonic table.
Sure, protest Trump. Then grow some hair on your collective testicles and take the torches and pitchforks to Buckinham palace and the House of Lords.

#12

Remember when W said the constitution was just a “goddamn piece of paper”?

#13

I beg to differ a little on this one, as London is easily the most surveilled city in the western world. You can’t take a shit or buy a pack of gum in London without being on camera.

#14

“Dumb Comment of the Day” award!

#15

Good Point.
But at least it is not illegal to protest there (yet).
When it is deemed illegal, the Brits will be in deep doo-doo.

#16

The Brits are doing what we should be doing! In contrast to the UK, Americans have not openly protested the Trump White House, which makes us look apathetic in comparison with the UK.

Are there any UK lefties on this site? Maybe thet can/will post some details. I know a lot of Brits ex-pats who live here. Almost every one is a leftie. They don’t like speaking up here for fear of republican xenophobia were they to overhear the kind of talk about progressive policies.

I believe we will discover that a real top contributor is that there are more than 2 left parties! As long as there isn’t a viable left 3rd party here the Democrats can abandon everyone who voted for them in order to pay back the campaign conttibutions. Every Dem federal representative would rather eat the ass of every rich contributor who told them to, rather than fight against them on behalf of every “sheeple” who voted for them! Lets face it, these representatives are rich and are thus writing down their own tax burdens whenever thry get a chance.

Let’s see, maybe the embrace of Louis Farakan by the leader’s of the women’s march, maybe the massive demonstrations at Berkely when a conservative speaker is invited to present, maybe the labeling as “racist” anyone pushing for smaller government, tax reform, or stopping illegal immigration into the USA, or maybe the shouting down of those who believe we should have voter ID to protect people from being disinfranchised. Just a few things that come to mind.

This is uncalled for vitriol.
