President Biden, as a Leader of Faith, Do Better on Immigration

Originally published at: President Biden, as a Leader of Faith, Do Better on Immigration

I looked into the videos. Expert riders. Powerful horses that could easily trample or crush. Yet, they are under firm control. No one is trampled. There are no whips. No whipping. No mention from the authors that most of these migrants trying to end run the horses have lived for years in Brazil, and their children are Brazilian nationals. Which makes “asylum” moot.

The authors’ joint appeal to Jesus, the Bible and the Catholic church as moral models are chilling, uninvited, untrue. The Jesus they praise, son of a father who got away with drowning earth’s population in a Flood, now sits at the right hand of that same father as chief judge of all souls. Some he will save. The majority, he will send to hell for unbelief and other progressive sins–like getting an abortion.

If the authors are interested in human catastrophe they might look at this: a week ago France concluded that 300,000 of its children have been abused by Catholic clergy in the past 70 years. We’ve seen all of this before. Awful news. Needs no embellishment, no distortion.

Haiti and its people do need help. I believe that. At the same time, no nation has an obligation to accept migrants from anywhere because they demand it.

Now, don’t get me started on the Catholic Conquistadors and the Incas and Mayans. Who Killed Sister Cathy anyway?

“President Biden, as a Leader of Faith…”

Have these authors lost all bearings? As Tina Turner would say, “What’s Faith got to do, got to do with it?” Do we not, supposedly, have separation of faith and politics (church and state)? One’s faith, or lack thereof, should have zero to do with politics or policy. Do the authors actually believe that those who claim religion are somehow more humanitarian, more ethical, than atheists? I call bullshit on that! Shame on the authors! Shame on CD for publishing this!

Documentation (without a URL, of course). Living under the thumb of Jair Bolsonaro seems a valid reason to migrate and request asylum.

What about the people that remain in Brazil under Bolsonaro? Wouldn’t it be easier to reform leadership and conditions than move half the country somewhere else. Especially when that somewhere else isn’t that great either? Another example is the Haitian migration.

Sure it would be, but how and by whom? Whenever the U.S gets involved, NGOs in Haiti for example, things get even worse.

Not just the US, the UN has had a presence in Haiti since I believe 2004. It is all pretty low-quality assistance with the largest amount of funding going to government and non-government agencies.

I just saw on another news site that they are preparing for a very large immigrant surge at the border with already 400,000 people not going through immigration service at all. We really need a new plan .

If a nation largely created the conditions from which the migrants are fleeing, then yes, they have a moral/ethical obligation to accept those migrants. This is true of Africans seeking asylum in rich European nations as well as those from the rest of the Americas seeking refuge here. The colonial and hegemonic brutality of nations is every bit as grievous as the crimes of religion.

Agree about the evils created by imperialism–as well as the home grown tyrants and capitalists who citizens themselves keep electing in many countries. Our obligation: use tools to undo the damage we are directly responsible for, and provide support and/or reparations where called for. Still, many nations continue to be wrecked by their own corrupt leadership. We have to face the fact that voters everywhere seem to love jerks: Our Trump is one example, Bolsonaro was also elected, and Al Sisi is now quite popular with the Egyptian middle class which fears change and turmoil. Socialists, Progressives everywhere are in the minority. Like here, for example. Just as our Natl Guard killed American students at Kent State, national guards everywhere seem quite ready to kill their own people when asked to. What’s up with that?
