Progressives Outraged as House Democrats Elect 'Big Money' Centrist Hakeem Jeffries Over Barbara Lee for Caucus Chair

Progressives Outraged as House Democrats Elect 'Big Money' Centrist Hakeem Jeffries Over Barbara Lee for Caucus Chair

Jake Johnson, staff writer

In a bid to move the party's leadership in a more bold direction, progressive groups and activists mobilized urgently in recent weeks to pressure House Democrats to elect Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) as the party's next Caucus Chair.

I can’t wait for our resident D apologists to try to spin this one.

Not a surprise at all to the majority of peoples that post here and indicated this would happen.

Given the track record of the DNC this should NOT be a surprise to those that post here and continue to insist the Democrats can be reformed from within. That this should not be a surprise to that latter group tells me they were not all that concerned about progressive issues in the first place.

There’s just one word for Dems: feckless.

If I were still a Democrat, I’d go online and switch to Independent, Socialist, or Green Party today.

There will be no reform.

Ever.

Their actions speak louder than their lies.

I can, and do, think of others as well…feckless is a good start.

And so begins the Democratic Party’s campaign to throw the 2020 elections. Russia Hysteria + Neoliberalism + Ignoring Voter Suppression = EPIC FAIL. They. Never. Learn…

But that hostile takeover is right around the corner…

Maybe, maybe not. But it’s the best plan I know of. Got a better idea – something with a chance to succeed?

Democrats seem to be focused on age, race or sex. When will they start to focus on principles - particularly economic fairness and integrity of our system? I really think they have lost it - they have lost their way and they are in a forest of money and cannot see their way out. When money and expediency is your only goal - then the game is lost for the rest of us. Everyday this party appears to be a losing boat for true progressives. If Pelosi wins, that will only further solidify that position.

Start with 5 liberal Independents committed to voting as a block. Caucus with the Ds except on a slate of non-negotiable issues such as HR676. Hand the Ds a defeat or three ala the tea party by being steadfast and uncompromising. Embarrass d-party leadership. Wear the label of roadblock to ‘progress’ proudly. Emphasize to the voting public that there is no more time for incrementalism. Earn respect.

Increase the number in the block next cycle to 10 or 15. Rinse and repeat.

You need far more than that to make an impact, but best of luck with that strategy; I truly hope you succeed. What are you going to do to implement it?

I would observe, ironically, it’s essentially the same thing I’m advocating – a hostile takeover of the party, except I realize it will take several election cycles to get there. But you do call them independents, of which I believe there are currently none in the House and two in the Senate.

All the so-called progressives, newbies (in particular), need to exit this obtuse and calcified party. Let them join the Greens where they belong. Also, as we face two existential threats, nuclear winter and ecological collapse, time for a Eco-Socialist Party.

It’s a shame that House Dems are not smart enough to vote Lee into a leadership role. She is exactly the kind of person needed. And it’s not like she has become speaker. Not a good sign for House Dems.

From the distance I see a sinking ship.

So let’s convince 5 of the new crop of liberal Ds that they’re spinning their wheels as Democrats. An admitted long shot but no worse than the ‘reform from within’ pipedream.

Exhibit A as we make our case to A-OC, Rashida, and Ayanna: Barbara Lee gets marginalized.
Exhibit B: Pelosi caves to the center right Problem Solver caucus. Yeah, that just happened too.

And Pelosi and Schumer can remain as symbols of the opposition - not. It’s a cozy, fun time for the pols in Washington.
